1863 (13 May) envelope from Lyttelton "via Marseilles & Suez" to London, bearing 3d. brown-lilac and 6d. red-brown, both with good to large margins, each neatly
cancelled "16", London Paid arrival c.d.s. (16.7) on face, despatch c.d.s. on reverse. A rare and most attractive franking. Sc. 13, 14; S.G. 40, 43. provenance: "Antipodes", 1988 Christie's Robson
Lowe, October 1989 Note: Whilst the additional French rate of 3d. per ¼oz. was introduced on 27 March 1857, it was not until 1 January 1863 that a 3d. value postage stamp was available. Nine months later, on 12 September 1863, the French rate
of 3d. was changed to 4d. for ½oz. letters. Use of the 3d. value for its intended use was therefore very short lived and covers in this period are comparatively rare. (Image) |

1864 (12 Jan.) ¼oz.-½oz. entire letter from Wellington to London, bearing 2d. pale blue, Plate 1 (worn) and 6d. brown horizontal pairs, both with margins in
places, and 6d, brown single with four margins or margins in places and thrice cancelled "7", London Paid c.d.s. (12.3) in red towards foot, despatch c.d.s. on reverse. A couple of the stamps with small defects though a most unusual franking at 10d.
plus 1/- for late fee. Sc. 12g, 14e; S.G. 38, 42. Note: The late fee of 1/- was introduced on 1 January 1864. It would appear that it was not mandatory to mark mail as Late Letter or that it was being charged the Late Fee. It is presumed that the
additional postage was sufficient in order to accept the letter for inclusion in the supplementary mails. Such mails were to be kept open until within twenty minutes of the latest period of despatch from the office. (Ellott) (Image) |
