1082   [Joseph Bissonette writes from Kansas, Missouri], interesting early letter from Joseph Bissonette, Wesport, May 18, 1836, to John B. Sarpy in St. Louis. With Kansas, MO manuscript postmark and 10 cent rate. Bissonette says he found the carts[Joseph Bissonette writes from Kansas, Missouri], interesting early letter from Joseph Bissonette, "Wesport," May 18, 1836, to John B. Sarpy in St. Louis. With "Kansas, MO" manuscript postmark and 10 cent rate. Bissonette says he found the carts and wagons in poor condition, and has lost two mules and a horse. He says if the mules are found, Sarpy can keep them if he credits him. Bissonette was born in 1818, so this is an extraordinarily early letter from him. Little is known of him from this time, and this may well have been his first trip west. He later worked for Sibille & Adams at Fort Platte. At this point, Westport had become a setting-off point for the West, and began to compete with nearby Independence. (Image) Est. $300-400

B. Preston, captain of a wagon train, to his wife in Logan, Cache County, Utah: "Wyoming, July 2, 1864... I have been here eleven days....am waiting for the boats with supplies to come up the river...I have loaded about forty wagons with from fourteen to fifteen hundred pounds and ten to twelve passengers and packed most of the wagons to the bows for the trip to Salt Lake...No chance to ride this time....All Danes, Swedes and a few Dutch for Providence...The Sam Pete [leader of another wagon train] teams take English, Welch and half Americans, Jolly crowd that." His wagon train was delayed until September before starting for Salt Lake City.The Wyoming Post Office was established in Otoe County 21 November, 1856. It was a Missouri River steamboat landing and staging point for Mormon emigration and freighting operations to Salt Lake City in 1864-66. Those in charge of operating the wagon trains waited at Wyoming for steamboats to bring the passengers and supplies before starting overland to Salt Lake. On 14 July, 1862 it became part of the Nevada Territory. It is likely that this Ty. I postmark once contained the designation "Utah T." or "U.T." which would have been cut out on the charge of territory.The purpose of having posts at these places was to prevent the Shoshone Indians from attacking the emigrants, mail stations and settlers. The soldiers from Fort Ruby policed the Overland Trail both ways - east to Deep Creek Station on the Nevada-Utah line, and west as far as Austin, Nevada. (imagea) (Image) Est. $1,000-1,500
