Q1/12 |
#Q1/12, The magnificent Parcel Post postal history
collection/accumulation formed by Merrill Bothamley, a remarkable array
of over 1,400 covers (and a few tags) all franked with Parcel Post stamps,
accumulated over literally a lifetime and each was selected by Mr.
Bothamely for its unusual usage, eye-appeal, rarity or simply because it
fit into his incredible attempt at completing a calendar of every possible
usage date for a Parcel Post stamp, while the great majority of covers bear
1c or 2c values (approximately 1,100 covers), there are hundreds of others
franked with 3c to $1.00 values, for example there are 89 3c covers, 37 4c
covers (which catalog $65.00 each), 68 5c covers (catalog $42.50 each), 72
10c covers (catalog $55.00 each), 12 15c covers (catalog $350.00 each),
three 20c covers (catalog $750.00 each), 13 25c covers (catalog $300.00
each) and one large part of a cover front franked with a $1.00 value
(catalogs $1,100.00 as a full cover); this accumulation is a gold mine of
rare foreign usages to such far-flung countries as Australia, British
Honduras, China, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guatemala, India, Jamaica, Liberia,
Russia, Serbia (just to name a few), plus there are unusual cancels, mixed
frankings, on board ship cancellations, fabulous advertising corner card
covers, bisect usages, precancels, usages from Guam, Hawaii, Mexico, Puerto
Rico and Shanghai, etc,; a large number of the covers found in this lot
were acquired individually at retail and at auction, often in the $25.00 to
$250.00 (or more) range and today would be impossible to duplicate, even if
one were to spend another lifetime seeking out similar covers; condition,
of course, varies but the great majority are fine-very fine; never before
has a collection of this magnitude ever been offered at auction,
representing literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Parcel Post
specialist or for the collector seeking out a fascinating new area to study
or exhibit. |
