United States Stamps continued...

1902-1903 ONE CENT FRANKLIN continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
401 ogBP 300b var. image#300b var., 1c Blue green booklet pane of six, a variety of position D with plate no. 3472 over the left stamp rather than the right stamp as is normal, an exceptionally fresh example of this booklet rarity, possessing strong deep color and prooflike impression, full o.g., relatively lightly hinged, nearly very fine and a choice example of this rare variety; this variety occurred because the plate number was entered by the plate maker over the thirteenth stamp in the top row rather than the fourteenth as is normal, not by a miscutting of the panes, specialists in this issue believe that only four examples from this plate have been discovered; certainly a key rarity for an exhibition collection; ex-Joyce. (Image) $4,000.00

SOLD for $7,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
402 c 314H image#314H, 1c Blue green imperforate coil, horizontal format, a gem strip of four with horizontal guide line at top, tied along with 7c Black (#507) to exceptionally attractive 2c Carmine on oriental buff postal entire (#U413c), together making the 13c wartime registry rate, locally posted in Philadelphia with registry ovals tying the stamps and October 11, 1918 c.d.s. of that city on the reverse, extremely fine in every respect; the imperforate coils have long been under appreciated for their rarity and desirability, even though they are government issued coils they have been associated with private vending and affixing machine issues because of their placement in the catalog, rather than being assigned their own Scott number as they should have been, the 1c 1908 issue is the earliest and scarcest of the 21 issued values, there are only five covers recorded with the 1c Green in horizontal format and this is quite likely the only example known with the most desirable strip of four; 1993 APS certificate. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $5,250.00
Will close during Public Auction
403 og 314 image#314, 1c Blue green imperforate, Brinkerhoff Ty. IIb perforations, pair, quite well centered, o.g., lightly hinged, slight paper toning, still very fine for this elusive Ty. IIb coil; small GPH handstamp on reverse. (Image) $360.00

404 c 314 image#314, 1c Blue green imperforate, U.S. Automatic Vending Ty. I separations, handsome single tied neatly to picture post card (Grant's Tomb in New York City) by "Madison Sq. Sta. N.Y./Dec 8, 1908" wavy line machine postmark, addressed to Roslindale, Mass., post card with couple of minor corner creases, a very fine and truly rare commercial usage of this stamp; one of just a few known on cover; this exceptional cover realized $1,870.00 (including premium) in our September 1997 Dr. Joseph Agris sale and again in our December 6, 2002 Roger S. Brody sale, the Scott catalog has used these identical prices as the basis for their current evaluation; 1991 APS certificate; ex-Agris, Brody (Image) $1,900.00

SOLD for $2,200.00

405 c 314 image#314, 1c Blue green imperforate, Covel Manufacturing Co. private perforations, single with horizontal Covel perforations, along with similar 1c Green single with Schermack perforations, Ty. III, both tied to a Hotel Corner card cover addressed to Covel Manufacturing Co. in Benton Harbor, Michigan, stamps tied by two strikes of "Warren/Ark./Oct. 17, 1913" duplex, Covel stamp affixed close to edge causing minor edge bend, otherwise very fine and clean cover; Filstrup made coils in both horizontal and vertical format, this vertical format is decidedly scarcer than the the horizontal, especially in this unusual combination. (Image) Est. 200-300

SOLD for $375.00
Will close during Public Auction
406 c 314 image#314, 1c Blue green imperforate, Covel Manufacturing Co. private perforations, paste-up pair with vertical Covel perforations, tied to corner card cover of Covel Manufacturing Co. and addressed to Mrs. L.L. Filstrup in Chicago (relation of A.W. Filstrup, creator of these perforations), stamps quite well centered and with deep color, tied by "Benton Harbor, Mich./Jan 4, 1916" machine cancel, cover wrinkles and small edge tear at bottom not affecting the stamps, otherwise very fine; a rare cover, this believed to be the only known cover with a paste-up pair. (Image) Est. 200-300

SOLD for $160.00
Will close during Public Auction
407 c 314 image#314, 1c Blue green imperforate, Covel Manufacturing Co. private perforations, well centered single with vertical Covel perforations, tied to 1c Green postal card (#UX27) with printed form of the Covel Manufacturing Co. on the message side, stamp tied by "Benton Harbor/Mich./Mar. 1,1919" machine cancel, the additional adhesive was needed to pay the 2c wartime postcard rate, light creases to the card not affecting the stamp, otherwise very fine; these perforations were the product of A.W. Filstrup, the controller of Covel Manufacturing Co., the perforations are very similar to the government perf. 12, however no deception was intended, Filstrup was a philatelist and produced these privately perforated stamps for personal and company use and, in fact, the earliest usage of his perforations predate the government coils by a few months; this usage on postal card is one of only two such cards known.
