42za |
#42za, 5/- Grey and chrome, the renowned CA
monogram mint single, easily qualifying as one of the most important
rarities in all Australian philately, as any CA monogram piece on the 5/-

c.t.o strip of three in the Royal Collection, a c.t.o. block of four (see
next lot) and a single, brilliantly fresh, radiant colors, o.g., lightly
hinged, vertical gum crease which is of no significance given this monogram
singles unique status, fine (A$27,500 - we are certain the final
realization this stamp achieves in the Gray sale will completely revise
this seemingly low catalog value). (Image) |

42zb |
#42zb, 5/- Grey and Chrome, Die II, a brilliantly
fresh bottom right corner margin JBC monogram strip of three, lovely
vibrant colors, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, very fine. All 5/- First
Watermark issue monogram items are important rarities of Australian
philately. Those with JBC monograms are among these rarities, especially if
found in anything other than a monogram single. In fact, of the ten pieces
recorded with the "JBC" monogram, five are mint singles (one of which is in
the R.T.P. Chapman collection, now part of the Australia Post archival
collection), two are c.t.o. singles, and one contained within a c.t.o.
block. Only two are found in mint strips of three - the preferred
configuration for monogram pieces (if they exist) - one of which is housed
in the Royal Collection. That leaves only the remarkable JBC monogram strip
of three from the Gray Collection available to collectors.A key
highlight - among many - in the Gray collection. One of the premier
monogram rarities of the entire issue (A$50,000).

single, rich colors, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, very fine for

as only five are recorded - three mint singles, one punctured large "OS"
and a block of six handstamped "Specimen" (see next lot). The mint monogram
single offered here is the first to appear on the auction market in years
and represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of
Australia's most important philatelic rarities.According to the ACSC,
"every example seen of both monograms is incomplete by being trimmed at
base" (A$45,000). (Image) |

#47x/z, 10/- Grey and Pink, handstamped
"Specimen", a showpiece bottom left corner margin CA monogram block
of six, strong rich colors, fairly well centered, o.g., small thin area
at edge of bottom sheet margins, overall very fine.Of the mere eleven
recorded examples of the 10/- First Watermark monograms, either CA or JBC,
there is only one in block form - the impressive block of six offered here.
Of the CA monograms there are only five known, three mint singles, one
punctured large "OS" and this unique corner margin block of six with
"Specimen" handstamp. To have one example of any 10/- First Watermark CA
monogram piece is a major collecting accomplishment. To have two of the
five known in the same collection is a feat of which only Mr. Gray can
boast; ex-Abramovich, Chapman (A$40,000).

JBC monogram single, particularly bright and fresh, well centered,

archival collection) and a single handstamped "Specimen" (see next lot).
All have the monogram incomplete by being trimmed at the base. The last
recorded auction realization for a JBC monogram single, was the similarly
centered (but bit hinge reinforced) copy offered in the May 2002 sale of
Kevin Nelson's Gold Medal collection of Australian Kangaroos (Prestige
Philately). It realized a then record A$36,000, plus the 12% buyer's
premium, which established the A$40,000 catalog value in 2004. (Image) |
