37b |
#37b, 2/- Brown, imperforate on three sides,
horizontal pair, top sheet-margin horizontal pair, being imperforate at
top and sides, well centered and margined, rich luxuriant color on bright
paper, o.g., lightly folded between the two stamps and partly separated by
hand resulting in a small tear (neatly closed) just touching the right hand
stamp, not detracting from this pair's extremely fine appearance nor from
its desirability and importance as one of Australia's greatest
rarities. The rarity of this remarkable pair is best detailed by the
editors of the Australian Commonwealth Specialist's Catalogue and we quote:
"One sheet from Plate 2 showing the top row imperforate except at base was
discovered in Adelaide in 1920. The strip of 12 errors was divided into
four pairs and a strip of three; the twelfth stamp was lost. One pair is in
the Royal Collection, and another is in the R.T.P. Chapman collection, now
part of the Australia Post archival collection. A third pair was in a
collection stolen in 1984, and its present status is uncertain. The strip
of three has since been divided into a pair and single. The pair offered
here is the left pair from the strip of three that was broken into a pair
and a single following the sale of the strip in the May 2001 auction of the
Colonel Harrie Evans collection (Premier Philatelic Auctions). The strip
realized A$88,000 (including premium), which at the time was a world record
auction price for any Commonwealth of Australia stamp item. Only this pair,
and one other (in a private collection in Australia), are in private hands.
An extraordinary opportunity to acquire not only one of Australia's
greatest rarities, but one of the most important rarities of the entire
Commonwealth as well (A$75,000). (Image) |
