44b |
#44aa, 5/- Grey and yellow, watermark sideways (crown
pointing to right), the sole known example of this watermark error,
fairly well centered, strong colors, slightly blurred Brisbane registered
cancel, mild horizontal crease in top margin and a few nibbed perforations,
all completely irrelevant given this stamp's unique status. This
remarkable rarity was first recorded in 1919, soon after its issue the
previous year. It is believed to be from a Harrison printing. Following its
discovery, its whereabouts were unknown until it appeared at auction in
Melbourne in May 1992.A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one
of the most important error rarities of not only Australia, but of the
entire British Commonwealth (A$50,000).

 |
44c |
#44c, 5/- Grey and yellow, doubly printed frame
plate, the remarkable right sheet-margin horizontal strip of four
containing the only four examples recorded of the double frame
variety, with the second (albeit faint, but easily discernible)
impression of the frame plate at a slight angle and 8-10mm below the first,
brilliantly fresh, exceptional centering, o.g., relatively l.h., very fine
and choice; this sensational strip is every bit as rare and of equal
importance as the double print on the Second Watermark 5/- which catalog
A$25,000 each, while this double print inexplicably only catalogs A$4,000
each (A$16,000 total), the irrelevance of its current catalog value was
highlighted when this strip sold for A$34,500 (including premium) in the
July 2005 sale of the marvelous Australian collection formed by Sir Gawaine
Baillie (Sotheby's); 1993 BPA certificate.

#44ca var., 5/- Grey and yellow, misplaced
kangaroo, a fresh mint single showing a shift of the kangaroo vignette
downward just to the top of the value circle, fresh colors, o.g., barest
trace of hinging, mild horizontal bend, still very fine for this popular
variety. (Image) |

 |
44ca var. |
#44ca var., 5/- Grey and yellow, misplaced
kangaroo, with shift of kangaroo vignette upwards into the Gulf of
Carpentaria, while a relatively minor shift, almost any shift to this
degree is most unusual and highly collectible, o.g., l.h. very fine;
ex-Nelson. (Image) |

44 var. |
#44 var., 5/- Grey and yellow, apparently imperforate
at base, a most unusual used example with large imperforate margin at
bottom the result of "jumped" perforations, margin at bottom quite
generous, which includes a bit of the marginal Jubilee line, portion of
large parcel cancel, a bit soiled, fine; offered on its own merits. (Image) |

44(D)d/44(V)q |
#44(D)d/44(V)q, 5/- Grey and yellow, plate
varieties, an extraordinary assemblage of 19 singles, one gutter strip
of four and one block of four, all mint, collected for their various plate
varieties of either the vignette or duty plate, virtually all different and
the vast majority have been identified by plate and position, a large
number being specifically listed in ACSC, all quite fresh, o.g., about a
half dozen stamps are n.h., one or two with minor flaws, overall fine-very
fine; a terribly difficult group to duplicate (all as hinged varieties
A$9,500). (Image) |

44z |
#44z, 5/- Grey and yellow, the magnificent bottom
right corner margin CA monogram block of eight, in an incredible
state of preservation and condition, marvelously bright and fresh,
outstanding centering throughout, with most unusual shift of central
Kangaroo vignette to right, pristine o.g., all stamps are n.h., hinged in
the selvage only, with a sensible hinge reinforcement of some separated
perforations at the bottom of the far right vertical row (not part of the
imprint strip of three), small irrelevant selvage thin at bottom right,
overall extremely fine.Any CA or JBC monogram unit of the 5/- Third
Watermark issue is a major rarity. Of the CA monograms, only six are
recorded, the mint block of eight offered here, a mint block of four, a
mint pair and three mint singles, one of which has an inverted watermark
(see next lot). This stunning mint block of eight is not only of
magnificent quality, it includes the corner monogram strip of three, the
configuration most desired by monogram collectors, but is almost never
available, especially on any of the high value bi-colored stamps. An
essential multiple for the collector seeking to assemble a world-class
collection of Australian monograms and imprints (A$60,000). (Image) |

 |
44a/za |
#44a/za, 5/- Grey and yellow, watermark inverted,
a highly important CA monogram single, vivid colors, exceptionally
well centered, o.g., stamp lightly hinged, there are two thin spots in the
bottom margin, one of which slightly rounds the bottom right corner, which
is of little consequence given this stamp's great rarity, otherwise very
fine; only six CA monograms are recorded on the 5/- Third Watermark
issue, the block of eight offered in the previous lot, a block of four,
a pair and four singles, with this example being the only one of the six
recorded whose watermark is inverted; inexplicably the editors of the
ACSC specifically price this CA monogram single with inverted watermark at
A$15,000, while under a separate listing they price any CA monogram single
at A$25,000, the disparity can only be explained by potentially factoring
in the condition of this particular example, however its unique status with
an inverted watermark should put it, at least, on even par with the three
other known CA monogram singles (A$15,000).

 |
44zc |
#44zc, 5/- Grey and yellow, the extremely rare
JBC monogram single, vivid colors, o.g., lightly hinged fine. The
5/- Third Watermark issue with a JBC monogram is one of the keys to any
collector whose goal it is to have an example of every known monogram or
imprint item. There are only three such monogram pieces recorded, a mint
strip of three in the Royal Collection, and two singles, one of which is in
the R.T.P. Chapman collection, now part of the Australia Post archival
collection. That leaves the mint single offered here from the Gray
Collection as the only example in private hands. With all due respect to
the catalog editors of the Australian Commonwealth Specialist's Catalogue
(ACSC), who have produced, in our opinion, one of the greatest specialized
philatelic catalogs, the catalog value they have assigned to this JBC
monogram single (A$27,500) is completely irrelevant. Several other high
denomination monogram singles that exist in "quantities" of three to six
(or more) typically catalog at least A$50,000 each, which we believe would
still be conservative in today's current marketplace considering this
stamp's unique status in private hands.

44zd |
#44zd, 5/- Grey and yellow, pristine bottom
margin T.S. Harrison imprint block of four, bottom right stamp [R55}
is the "white flaw off N.S.W. coast" variety, radiant colors, o.g., lightly
hinged, usual vertical fold in gutter which ends in a small tear in the
bottom margin, still fine and exceedingly rare; all Harrison imprints
larger than a pair are quite rare, with only six blocks of four and one
block of eight recorded (A$12,500).
