spectacular inter-panneau block of 24 (12 x 2), being the complete
bottom two rows from Plate 1 (upper), includes both no monogram strips from
the left and right panes, with all stamps in the bottom row displaying
double perforations on three sides (normally perforated at bottom),
o.g., some sensible hinge reinforcement of perforations, some of which were
separated as to be expected due to the double perforating, minor selvage
bends, very fine; a most remarkable showpiece; ex-Col. Evans
(catalogs A$2,400 just as singles alone, unpriced as two full no monogram

perforations, the other only being a pair; the ½p is the only Kangaroo
value recorded with triple perforations (A$2,000).

comprised of two pairs with wide horizontal gutter between, unusually well
centered, o.g., faint trace of hinging, horizontal creasing in center of
gutter as found on all known examples, very fine and choice; initial
supplies of the first four denominations printed - ½p, 1p, 2p and 6p - were
distributed to post offices in uncut double sheets of 240, resulting in
vertical intersheet gutter pairs, only a very few examples of the ½p and 1p
intersheet pieces remain in private hands, all other blocks are in
institutional collections (A$4,000+).

horizontal gutter, and a narrow inter-panneau vertical gutter with
Jubilee lines, well centered, o.g., small h.r. reinforcing some separated

creasing in wide gutter, still very fine; the only cross gutter block we
are aware of in private hands; this multiple, and the four previous lots,
represent a reconstructed "sheet" and, as such, make for a remarkable

#1A-C vars., ½p Green, plate varieties, a wonderful specialized
group of 18 items in singles, pairs and various sized blocks (111 stamps in
all), well annotated on exhibition pages noting the many constant plate
flaws found on this value, includes a block of 42 showing numerous
varieties including the large colored flaw off the coast at Sydney [1R40],
several examples of the "ROSTAGE" flaw [2L12] in various states (including
two examples in scarce coil strips of four), defective "ST" of "AUSTRALIA"
[2L13] in three stages (including a mint block of 18 punctured "T" for use
by the Tasmanian Government Departments), we also note a used example of
the scarce "Bite" out of the upper side of Kangaroo's tail [2R6], all but
four stamps are mint, o.g., several stamps n.h., overall fine-very fine. |

dealer (Howard Davis) corner card cover, along with three adhesives from
New South Wales, one from Queensland, two from South Australia and four
from Victoria by "South Melbourne/15.1.13" second day of issue
double circle postmarks, addressed to France, some States stamps with small
faults, still fine overall and colorful; for years it was originally
thought the first day of issue of the ½p Kangaroo was in Melbourne on
January 16, 1913 (based on a dated piece in the Royal Collection), now
January 14th is now regarded as the first date of issue, the following day
(represented by this cover) is the earliest that the ½p stamp could have
been on sale at the South Melbourne post office.
