#U125, 2c Brown on orange, die 48, size 10. knife 53u, wmk. 2, mint "Centennial" entire, a handsome example of one of the great postal stationery rarities, exceptionally clean and crisp, fresh imprint color on an attractive uniformly orange cover, faintest hint of a bend at left mentioned for complete accuracy, extremely fine; this is the slightly larger size of the two sizes that this special "Centennial" issue is found, its "Centennial" status is easily determined as no envelopes were regularly issued with this die on orange paper, both sizes appear to be of equal rarity with only three examples of each that we are aware, furthermore this is one of the most attractive of the three; ex-Close, Lilly (UPSS #300). #U140A, 2c Red brown on orange, die 52, size 7, knife 30u, wmk. 2, mint "Centennial" entire, magnificently fresh and clean, with strong color and embossing, couple of minor mounting hinge thins on the backflap only and of little consequence considering this entire's incomparable rarity, extremely fine; to our knowledge this is one of only two or possibly three entires of Scott #U140A in existence, apparently most of the very few examples issued have been reduced to cut squares, this is the second example we have had the privilege to offer in our auctions, the first (also with mounting thins) was the slightly larger size offered in Shreves March 2002 Premier Sale where it realized $40,000.00, plus the buyers premium, against a then catalog value of $32,500.00, that sale being the basis for the current catalog value; a great "Centennial" envelope rarity, this being the only example of which we are aware in this more desirable smaller size (UPSS #321).
