PUERTO RICO
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1361 c S.G. #CC1 imageS.G. #CC1, Black "Paid at/San Juan Porto Rico" Crowned Circle, an unusually clear and attractive strike of this scarce marking on folded 1857 entire letter to Madrid, Spain, in combination franking with choice Cuba 1/2r Greenish black with four extra-large margins (Scott #9 var), most interestingly this cover either did not go through the Puerto Rican post office or if it did they forgot to apply that post office's markings, as the stamp is tied by French transit c.d.s. and a Spanish blue oval grid which was quite likely applied on arrival in Madrid, lovely British "San Juan Porto-Rico/SP 21/1857" double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse, via London with "Paid" c.d.s. and "PP" in circle, then via France to Spain where backstamped, ms. "1/11" British rate, extremely fine; not only is this an unusual and rare usage, but the condition is outstanding with all markings, both front and back, well struck and attractive, magnificent condition rarely found on these covers; Francisco Graus certificate; ex-Jarrett. (Image) Est. $2,000-3,000
