KINGDOM OF ITALY COLLECTIONS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
292 og Italy substantial and valuable mint collection covering the period from the beginning of the unified Kingdom in 1862 to the 1939 issues of the Republic prior to the war, the collection consists of over 750 different, there is an excellent showing of the first perforated issues that used the designs of Sardinia and the 1863-77 King Victor Emmanuel II issues, some of these have o.g. but a number are unused or regummed and are so valued, thereafter quite comprehensive with better sets and singles that largely have original gum, we note a few imperforated proofs in singles or pairs that are without gum as issued and not counted, includes the 1922 Philatelic Congress overprints, also included are sixteen different mint values with advertising labels at bottom also not counted, semi-postals are quite comprehensive including eleven different "B.L.P." overprints which are usually signed by various experts, air posts are also attractive with the 1930 7.70L Trans-Atlantic Squadron and 20 different sets of triptychs, other back-of-the-book issues include pneumatic posts, special deliveries, comprehensive postage dues including a 10L Blue and brown first issue plus parcel posts, condition varies some on the early issues as would be expected with a few faults present but these are largely in the minority and even when present the stamps are of attractive appearance, the 20th century stamps are uniformly o.g., issues of the late 1920's and 1930's are sometimes n.h., fine-very fine; an excellent solid mint collection of Italy proper; stamps will be found signed throughout and accompanied by three certificates of various Italian experts; total Scott catalog value is in excess of $25,000.00. 293 og/nhO Italy fascinating variety collection balance of well over 400 largely mint singles plus another 50 multiples, one of the most intriguing characteristics of the Italian area, and especially Italy proper, is the numerous varieties that are found on issues from the earliest period right up through the 1930's prior to WWII, this significant collection is housed in a large stock book and includes an amazing number of Sassone listed items, which are occasionally also listed in Scott, plus a number of more minor varieties that are listed in neither, some of the types of things that we note are a great number of perforation errors and varieties, includes imperforates, some of the issued stamps and proofs of others, imperforate between the stamp and a sheet margin on one side as well as imperforate between, printing varieties include double impressions, sometimes with one inverted, also printed on front and back plus full strong offsets, there are a number of postage dues that have inverted numerals, most are the later issue and include some blocks of four, but also including some better used values of the early issue that are very scarce, if not rare, the Sassone listed varieties are very substantial in this collection but in addition there are numerous unlisted varieties such as watermarked varieties including inverted and other positions, unusual perforation shifts, etc., condition varies, mostly in the centering, but that is often due to the very nature of the varieties themselves, the vast majority have o.g., some are n.h., there are a few used items but our observation is that these are much scarcer than the mint, overall the majority are fine-very fine for this type of unusual material; this collection will want to be viewed by anyone attempting to build a specialized collection of Italy; signed stamps are found throughout and accompanied by eight Enzo Diena and three Raybaudi certificates; total Sassone catalog value for the listed material is in excess of €50,000 with quite a number of items that are not listed and not included in that total. 294 og/nhO Italy large mint and used accumulation balance housed in five large stockbooks containing in excess of 5,000 stamps, consists of Italy proper only and includes all of the various types of stamps including some Scott unlisted issues, the duplication is much more extensive in this accumulation than in many of the other Italian areas, it starts with a large section of 19th century mainly used with numerous numeral cancellations, many of these stamps have an unused or mint example as well, but the concentration is in used, in the 20th century mint becomes more prominent with at least one example and often two or three, used is still in rather strong duplication, as the accumulation progresses mint and used become more balanced with a half dozen or more of each value with some more and some less, the second volume is largely the issues of the 1930's with two or three mint and numerous used, another volume is devoted to semi-postals including a nice group of genuine mint "B.L.P." overprints, some signed, also air posts which concentrates in mint with many of the used that are present not counted because of dubious cancels, plus pneumatic posts and special deliveries, extensive postage dues with better values are present in another volume along with officials and parcel posts, the final volume includes non-Scott items such as insurance stamps, postal service commission, money order stamps and locals and various vignettes, condition varies considerably depending on the period, 20th century is o.g. or used and is generally fine-very fine; while duplication is substantial the value is in issues that are often not that duplicated; a useful stock of Italy that warrants examination; total Scott value is in the $30,000.00-35,000.00 range with 20th century being $20,000.00-25,000.00 of that total. Most countries when they make overprints or surcharges for some purpose simply apply the overprint to regular stamps that they have available. However Italy, instead of putting the "Estero" overprint on regular stamps of Italy, first altered the designs of the stamps in small ways, printed new stamps and then applied the overprints. The alterations they made were usually small changes to the four corner ornaments of designs already in use in Italy. On the 1c Olive green they made little white squares with a dot in them. This convention is handy in knowing genuine overprints because the only thing that fakes could be produced on were regular Italian stamps without alteration. This makes it obvious that the stamp is suspect. The stamps that were altered, but for some reason failed to receive an overprint, are great rarities for each of the four values that are known to exist. Very few examples of any of these are known and the 1c and 2c are the only values that are priced with values that illustrate their incredible rarity. The One Centesimo Olive green and the Two Centesimi Brown red in the next lot are the only examples that we have ever encountered; a major Offices in Levant rarity that may not appear on the market again in a generation; not listed in Scott; signed A. D(iena), Raybaudi and accompanied by a 2007 Raybaudi gold certificate. (Image) €75,000
