smaller than the normal provisional surcharge of the 1934 issue, luxuSassone #36A, 1934 1,30L on 1,25L Blue trial provisional surcharge, a beautifully centered used single of this Vatican City rarity, the "1,30" between the bars is significantly smaller than the normal provisional surcharge of the 1934 issue, luxuriant color on brilliant white paper, neat cancel at bottom right, extremely fine; this unusual surcharge was a trial or essay that was prepared when the provisional overprints were being made (not a variety within the surcharge setting), one sheet of 100 was erroneously delivered to the post office and almost half of the sheet was used before the error was discovered; an amazingly rare postally used stamp and one of the most important rarities of this country that rarely comes on the market, in fact this is the first example we have ever had the pleasure to offer in our auctions; signed A. 512 nh Sassone S#2A Sassone S2A, 1931 10c Green postage due with Segnatasse overprint, a stamp similar to the first 10c Green postage due but without frame, exceptionally fresh right sheet-margin
single, lovely bright color and well impressed overprint, o.g., n.hSassone S#2A, 1931 10c Green postage due with "Segnatasse" overprint, a stamp similar to the first 10c Green postage due but without frame, exceptionally fresh right sheet-margin single, lovely bright color and well impressed overprint, o.g., n.h., trivial internal gum bend mentioned for complete accuracy only, extremely fine; this incredibly rare stamp has been confused by other catalogs as being a variety of the normal 10c postage due, much like the surcharges of this set that come with and without frames and are normal varieties of modest value, this may explain why the Scott value is so ridiculously low on their listing, in fact this stamp was a trial or essay much like the small "1,30" surcharge for the 1934 Provisionals, all of the trials were destroyed except for one sheet of the the 10c which was mistakenly delivered to the post office, the stamp was rarely used and is known on cover, nevertheless this is a major rarity with less than 100 mint examples yet remaining and a highly desirable addition to a specialized Vatican City collection in this choice condition; signed A. D(iena) and one other (Scott #J2a; $650.00). (Image) €6,000
