Clarkson, in the Humansdorp Division is a small town at approximately the western border of the Eastern Frontier. It was established in 1839 as a station of the Mission Board of the Moravian Church and named in honor of Thomas Clarkson who played a leading role in the abolition of slavery. The 1875 census indicates that the station had a population of 340.
