The valuable and comprehensive balance of the William H. Gross Collection of Scandinavia, hundreds of virtually all different stamps all neatly displayed on Lighthouse hingeless album pages and housed in a single album, only the countries of
Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden are represented, but each of these countries is quite comprehensive from the first issue of each country until about the 1930's, nearly all of the stamps are collected mint, although typically the first couple of
stamps of each country are found used, including all five Sweden 1855 Skilling Banco issues, plus there is the occasional "duplicate" used example, in addition to a mint copy, and often these are much more valuable used than mint; Denmark is nearing
completion and is augmented with some interesting Facit listed varieties, Iceland is also quite strong with many better single stamps and sets, including strong officials (we note the presence of a mint example of #O1 which catalogs $7,500.00, but
has a small thin), Norway, while having no really rare stamps, is quite solid and adds up quickly, Sweden is the most valuable section containing many scarce stamps, the collection as a whole has a plethora of elusive and valuable stamps throughout,
many of which catalog $100.00 to $1,000.00 or more; as mentioned most stamps are mint with o.g., although there are some earlier issues either used or without gum, hinging ranges from h.r. to n.h. (several better n.h. stamps and sets are noted),
condition is a bit mixed on the earliest issues, but the overall quality is much better than typically found in most collection "balances"; a valuable and worthwhile lot, as we are certain the total catalog value in Scott will unquestionably exceed
$100,000.00. |
