RB10a |
#RB10a, $5.00 Green and black on violet paper, a remarkable bottom margin example with full imprint of George T. Jones, excellent centering, rich bright color and
an excellent clarity of impression, full original gum, a few h.r.'s, tiny thin speck, a small edge repair at right and a single light toned spot, extremely fine appearance; an extraordinarily rare combination of physical characteristics: original
gum, choice centering and a full imprint in the margin; because the Cunliffe collection contains three examples of the Five Dollar Proprietary stamp with an imprint (this mint single, a rejoined pair, and the fabulous strip of three), one might get
the impression that they are somewhat available, however, in our exhaustive search of past revenue catalogs, we were unable to locate any other examples. (Image) |

RB10a |
#RB10a, $5.00 Green and black on violet paper, an exceedingly handsome and incredibly rare mint example, well centered, sumptuously rich color and a deeply etched
impression, part original gum, two tiny thin specks, a virtually undetectable minute repair at top and two faint toned spots at the left of the vignette, very fine appearance; the aforementioned flaws are quite inconsequential, as nearly all examples
have more severe faults and mint copies are almost never encountered (there is at most one original gum fault free example extant). (Image) |

RB10a |
#RB10a, $5.00 Green and black on violet paper, an incredibly rare unused example of this high value, well centered, exceedingly rich colors, barest trace of an edge
thin at the bottom left corner which is slightly rounded and a tiny expert repair at the top of the left margin (latter not mentioned on the certificate), very fine appearance; the certificate calls this violet paper but it has a strong green cast
and could more appropriately be called intermediate paper; 1975 PF certificate. (Image) |

#RB10a, $5.00 Green and black on violet paper, well centered, strong rich color and a crisp detailed impression, 1878 ms. cancel, slight edge thins at top and a few
short perfs. at bottom, very fine appearance; despite the minor imperfections (virtually all copies have faults or repairs), this is a highly desirable example of this rare high value. (Image) |

RB10a |
#RB10a, $5.00 Green and black on violet paper, bottom margin rejoined horizontal pair with Wilcox's imprint in margin of right stamp, strong rich colors,
well centered and margined, neat ms. cancels dated Feb 18., 1879, very faint insignificant creases and a pinpoint thin speck on left stamp, very fine; a phenomenally rare pair that is one of only three multiples known, the other two being a
non-imprint horizontal pair and the imprint strip of three offered in the next lot; a spectacular and important showpiece that would be perfect for exhibition. (Image) |

RB10a |
#RB10a, $5.00 Green and black on violet paper, a magnificent bottom sheet-margin imprint strip of three, exceedingly well centered, deeply rich colors and
highly detailed impressions, 1879 ms. cancels, right stamp with small internal repair, left stamp with minor toned spots, vertical perforations had become separated and have been neatly reattached with hinges, very fine appearance. For years it was
assumed the largest known multiple of the Five Dollar Proprietary Stamp was a horizontal pair. One pair was offered in both the 1989 Weill Brothers sale and the 1991 Joyce collection and in both catalogs it was listed as the largest known multiple,
with one other pair known. The other pair they are referring to is apparently the rejoined imprint pair offered in the previous lot. This strip of three, with its excellent centering, deep color, and most important of all, full imprints of both Jos.
R. Carpenter and George T. Jones in the bottom margin, is not only the largest multiple of this rare stamp, but also one of the most amazing showpieces in all of Nineteenth Century revenues. An incredible imprint strip of three that is one of the
most important items in the entire Cunliffe collection. (Image) |

RB10b |
#RB10b, $5.00 Green and black on green paper, well centered, strong rich colors and well incised impressions, small ms. cancel, two tiny thin spots at bottom and
a couple trivial facial scuffs at top, very fine appearance. To date there have been only three certified copies of the Five Dollar Proprietary on green paper. One, with P.F. certificates #18044 and 285445, is extensively repaired. A second example
was in the Joyce and Zoellner collections and has a small thin spot. There is another example that has a 1996 PSE certificate as green paper, however, in 2003 that stamp was submitted to the Philatelic Foundation and received a certificate stating it
is on intermediate paper. Therefore, the Cunliffe copy, with its minor flaws, is one of the two best examples of the three Five Dollar Proprietary on Green Paper that are currently known. Not only is this one of the most important stamps of United
States revenues, it is also one of the rarest and most desirable stamps in all of United States philately. Accompanied by 1991 PF and PSE certificates. (Image) |
