S.G. #18b, 1907 "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge, an exceptional example of this rare surcharge error, showing two very distinctive and well
displaced surcharge impressions (several of the known examples have the double surcharges almost on top of one another making the error difficult to see), quite well centered, fresh rich colors, o.g., trivial horizontal bend not mentioned on either
accompanying certificate, very fine; a total of only 20 examples of the double surcharge have been recorded, and the example offered here is among the most distinct and striking of this tiny population; signed E. Diena and accompanied by his

S.G. #55 |
S.G. #55, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, the rare type 16, a remarkable franking of a single and a horizontal pair of this most important
surcharge type (along with a single of the type 15 surcharge), all tied to a small neat registered cover to Reading, England by "Georgetown/Oc 9 17/Grand Cayman" type 5 c.d.s., with "R" in oval handstamp and blue crayon registration "label" type R6,
various transit and receiving markings on reverse, just the faintest trace of toning on a couple of perf. tips, very fine; a cover of immense rarity as very few examples of the type 16 surcharges are known, and our research indicates that only two
full covers and one cover front are franked with this surcharge, the other full cover, which bears only a single franking is used out of period (1919), so this cover is unique in the fact that it is the only cover bearing three examples, used in
the right time period and completely intact; the aforementioned cover front was sold in our February 2007 sale of Richard Maisel's award-winning Cayman Islands collection, where it realized $8,000.00, plus the buyer's premium; an essential cover for
the serious Cayman Islands or War Tax specialist; 1995 BPA certificate; ex-Meredith, Cooley. (Image) |

S.G. #18 |
S.G. #18, 1886 "One Penny" surcharge on 6p Green, an incredibly rare mint example, of which only two are known to exist, this being the better of the two (the other
is the ex-Hind copy which has a slight crease and is not quite as well centered), the example offered here, which has not been on the market in over a dozen years, is attractively centered and has large part o.g., there is a trivial surface abrasion
and some slight toning, which is mostly confined to the reverse and is of little importance considering it's virtually unique status, very fine. The existence of this stamp is the result of an error as the "One Penny" surcharge was meant for the
1/- value to alleviate a shortage of 1p stamps. A single sheet of 6p stamps was surcharged in error, and was brought to the attention of a Mr. Porter, Treasurer of Dominica, who, it is said, saved twelve stamps for himself, ten of which he used on an
envelope to a stamp dealer friend, and retained only two mint singles. He then had the remaining stamps destroyed. As a result, these two mint stamps are ranked among the greatest rarities of British Commonwealth philately.A once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for the serious British Commonwealth collector or the exhibitor of Dominica; signed H. Bloch and accompanied by his 1978 Friedl certificate, as well as a 1995 BPA certificate; ex-Gibralter (Scott #14; $24,000.00). (Image) |
