American Bank Note Company salesman sample page containing a striking array of twenty-eight different plate proofs or trial color proofs of various stamps the ABNC
printed and all neatly mounted in a 7x4 arrangement on a thick card measuring 210x149mm, each proof has a most unusual "MUESTRA" (Specimen) diagonal overprint in red, proofs include the 2c, 5c and 40c 1883 Issue of Costa Rica, other proofs of the
same era include eleven U.S. related issues (including postage due and telegraph proofs), one 25c Hawaii proof (we have never seen this stamp before with a "MUESTRA" overprint), three Canadian proofs and ten other proofs from various Latin American
countries, each with small manuscript numeral, blind embossed "American Bank Note Co." imprint to card at bottom left, very fine; the only such sample page we have ever seen; a wonderful exhibition item. (Image) |

value, mounted separately on large cards measuring approximately 146x215mm, the designs appear to be the final, or close to, the accepted designs, for example the the 1/2r design has no shading lines above the "PORTE" tablet, all with "American Bank
Note Company" imprint on the India paper and with plate numbers either engraved or noted in pencil on each, the 2r with some minor toning around engraved image, overall very fine; a stunning set essential for the serious Costa Rica collector. (Image) |

1868 American Bank Note Company trade sample sheet, engraved in golden yellow on mesh wove paper, the complete sheet displaying nineteen different stamps having been
produced by the ABNC, including the Costa Rica 1863 2r First Issue in position 13, along with eleven different BNA issues and stamps from Brazil, Chile and Mexico, unusually wide margins surround the sheet, few negligible flaws including a small
pinhole and light creasing in the wide edges of the sheet, overall very fine and stunning; intact sample sheets such as this are quite rare as most were cut up into individual proofs, remarkably the Mayer collection features a total of eight intact
