198 |
#198, 12c Blackish purple special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily well centered within large margins, rich luxuriant color and a prooflike
impression on unusually fresh paper, extremely fine.A magnificent quality example of this Special Printing rarity, certainly among the finest available of the approximately 60 to 70 copies thought to still exist. Many of the recorded examples are
either not near as well centered as this particular copy, or others have small thin spots which are endemic to the "Soft Paper" Special Printings. An important stamp for the most sophisticated United States collection.Signed lightly in pencil by
Ward, and accompanied by 1994 and 2001 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (XF 90; SMQ $29,000.000). This being one of only five copies of Scott #198 to have been graded by the PSE; ex-Floyd.

#201, 30c Greenish black special printing, without gum as issued, marvelously well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, rich unmistakable greenish
black color and a strong impression on bright paper, unusually even and intact perforations all around, extremely fine for this.An exceptionally handsome and choice example of this very rare stamp, being in a quality which few Special Printings
exist. Approximately 40 to 45 examples are thought to exist of this denomination and few are as choice as the one offered here.Signed "E.K". (Eugene Klein) lightly in pencil and accompanied by 1994 and 2001 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE
certificate (VF 80; SMQ $38,000.00); ex-West, "Concord" and Floyd. (Image) |

203 |
#203, 2c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, incredibly well centered, wonderfully vibrant and intense color that is characteristic only
to genuine special printings, fresh bright paper, completely free of the faults that affect several existing examples, uniformly even and intact perforations, an extremely fine gem in every regard.A magnificent example of this immensely rare
stamp, of which only 20 are recorded (18 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus two others - one of these is not available to collectors as it is in the Miller collection housed in the New York Public Library). Small faults or missing
perforations affect five of the 19 examples potentially available to collectors, leaving only 14 sound copies, and many of these have inferior centering. Upon comparison to the other known examples, it becomes quite evident that the Minervino example
clearly ranks among the very finest due to its outstanding fault-free condition, its eye-arresting color and its exceptional centering. Ranking this stamp among the finest in existence is not our opinion alone. In fact, the Professional Stamp Experts
(PSE) just recently issued a new certificate for this wonderful stamp and they have graded it VF-XF 85 - the highest grade they have awarded to any Scott #203.An exciting and rare opportunity to acquire one of the great rarities of the United
States in the finest available condition. Accompanied by 1957 and 1997 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $205,000.00); ex-Caspary, "Ambassador" and Lyons. (Image) |

204 |
#204, 5c Deep blue special printing, without gum as issued, phenomenally well centered amid immense margins which are unheard of on any of the Special Printings, deep
luxuriant color and a crisp detailed impression on fresh paper, uniformly even and intact perforations all around, simply superb. An absolutely breathtaking example of one of the great rarities in U.S. philately. We are aware of only 18 confirmed
copies, 17 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus there is an additional copy housed in the Miller collection at the New York Public Library. Approximately one third of the copies available to collectors have small faults,
therefore there are only a dozen sound copies and not a single one can approach the overall condition of the amazing example offered here. To confirm this stamp's unique place in the history of United States philately as perhaps the greatest
condition rarity extant, we recently obtained a graded certificate from the Professional Stamp Experts (PSE), who assigned the spectacular "Superb 98 Jumbo" grade. Not only is this the highest graded Five Cent 1880 American Bank Note Company
soft-paper Special Printing in their Population Report, it is also the highest graded Special Printing of any kind - by far. In fact, we cannot think of any other great American philatelic rarity whose condition can remotely compare to this stamp -
and none are found in the PSE's Population Report.A once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire one of the most spectacular philatelic rarities in existence. Accompanied by 1953, 1992 and 2001 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate
(Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $810,000.00 for 98, the highest grade they price). Each time this famous stamp has appeared on the auction market it has realized a record price at the time. We expect its appearance now will generate another record. The stamp
also comes with an impressive provenance, as it has graced the collections of several important collections of the past, including Hetherington, Anderson and Floyd. (Image) |

205C |
#205C, 5c Gray brown special printing, without gum as issued, a gem example of this immensely rare stamp, possessing virtually perfect centering within
uncharacteristically large margins, exceptional rich color and a crisp impression, fully intact and unusually even perforations all around, extremely fine.A magnificent quality example of this stamp, one of the rarest of all the Special Printings.
A total of 22 different copies have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as genuine Five Cent Garfield Special Printings. Of this minute population the example offered here is one of the finest, if not the finest, in existence. This stamp
comes from the famous and unique block of four that once resided in the Caspary collection, which was broken up years later to meet the demand for choice singles of this rarity. It was the top right stamp from the block, and the best centered of the
four. Because of the extreme rarity of this stamp very few collectors will ever have a chance to own a copy of this famous Special Printing, and fewer still can acquire one in such outstanding quality. Accompanied by 1957 and 1989 PF
certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $205,000.00). This is the highest grade yet assigned to any example of Scott #205C by the PSE, and the sole copy to have been awarded this impressive grade (four others have
been graded 90); ex-Caspary, Weill Brothers and Williams. (Image) |
