#128, 12c Green re-issue, a fabulous quality
example of this very rare used re-issue, being in a condition that is
virtually unheard of on any of the known used 1869 Pictorial Re-issues,
magnificently centered amid lavishly large margins, eye-arresting color in
an incredibly deep shade, plus its impression is deeply etched on bright
paper, superbly postmarked with a light magenta cancel at bottom,
leaving the central vignette cancel free, a superb stamp for the finest
used collection; Jon Rose, in his exceptional United States Postage
Stamps of 1869 handbook, estimates that only 15-25 used Twelve Cent
Re-issues exist and, in our opinion, there exists no finer than the copy
offered here; 1991 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-Morris. (Image) |

estimates that there are only five to ten in existence, and most are
typically found without gum; with such a tiny number known the catalog
value does not accurately reflect this stamp's true rarity; 2002 PF
certificate. (Image) |

139 var. |
#139 var., 10c Brown with "I" grill, an
incomparable used example that is surely among the very finest that
exist, possessing outstanding centering amid absolutely immense margins
that are almost unheard of on any of the grilled Bank Notes, wonderfully
rich color and impression that is exquisitely contrasted by a vivid
red circular datestamp, in addition to being a spectacular quality
used example of this value, this stamp bears an easily identifiable "I"
grill, which is far more more elusive to find than the more typically seen
"H" grill, which currently is the only grill listed in the Scott catalog,
despite the rarity and collectability of the "I" grill (to date only six
examples of the Ten Cent value with an "I" grill have been identified, with
this example, being, by far, the finest recorded), extremely fine; a
stunning gem for the finest collection; 1962 and 2002 PF certificates (the
latter specifically identifying this as the "I" grill variety);
ex-Engel, "Connoisseur" Collection, Renne and Floyd. (Image) |
