#10-11, 3c 1851 interesting and extensive plating and usage study,
this collection contains over 275 stamps including multiples, plus 56
covers, all concentrating on the imperforate 3c issue of the years
1851-1857, it starts with a selection of eleven used singles of the orange
brown color including four on piece, plus nine covers, in both these and
the later colors an emphasis has been placed on plating, the orange browns
are represented by examples from the four plates that were used for this
color including both the early and intermediate states of Plate 1, the
covers are all dated between July 15th and November 4th of 1851 except one
Augusta, Georgia cover of February 12, 1852 with a clearly identified 3c
Orange brown from plate 2 early, the earliest dated item is a Plate 1 early
stamp on July 8, 1851 large piece with Blood's pre-paid handstamp, the rest
of the stamps are the various colors under Scott #11, includes several
pages showing the various colors and trying to place them by year date, the
only mint examples include a horizontal pair with o.g. and a reconstructed
bottom margin block of six (2x3; positions 78R1L/99R1L) consisting of two
vertical strips of three, also with o.g., other used multiples include a
horizontal strip of five, two strips of four and a strip of three, plus
various pairs, a reconstruction of the imprint and plate no.3 is formed by
three stamps, numerous plate varieties are shown, and plating has been done
where the collector could, single stamps also show various cancels and the
over 50 covers show a wide range of postal history, some of the highlights
include two covers with Blood's Despatch locals and a third with Boyd's
City Express local, two New York Express Mail covers, various ship markings
and town cancels, etc., one cover has a position from the large crack in
Plate 5 (position 94L5L), with a position 84L5L on piece included to show
the continuation of the crack, this is a wonderful collection for the
student of this popular classic issue, condition varies as would be
expected for a collection of this size, but there are numerous four-margin
copies and many are fine-very fine or better; also includes the 26 actual
size plating reconstruction photos from the Smithsonian Institute for all
the plates in their various states, indispensable for plating. |
