#575 var., 1c Green, imperforate, Schermack Ty.
III, attractive single with Chicago, Illinois precancel, on window
envelope of A. W. Shaw Co., this illustrates well the vending machine usage
for bulk mailing, this issue was used only for a short time and makes
covers decidedly scarce, very fine; this is the cover pictured in United
States Stamps 1922-26 by Gary Griffith.

#578, 1c Green coil waste, a fresh horizontal
pair with usual fine centering, tied to neat cover by "Elizabeth, N.J./Apr
16/1925" flag machine cancel, a clean and very fine cover; the 1c coil
waste is considerably scarcer used than its 2c counterpart despite the
similar catalog values, even scarcer are covers as most postal items for
which the "cover" price applies are post cards; this cover is an
exceptionally attractive example of this scarcer usage. (Image) |

594 |
#594, 1c Green coil waste, a magnificent quality
single, with virtually perfect centering and long full perforations all
around, tied by a "New York, N.Y. Sta. Y/1924" dateless machine cancel to
an immaculate unsealed circular rate cover with neat typewritten local
address, extremely fine in every regard. The 1923 One Cent Green Coil
Waste stamp is not only one of the rarest stamps in 20th century philately,
with fewer than 100 confirmed examples, but it also is widely regarded as
one of the most difficult of all U.S. issues to find in any kind of premium
condition. Virtually every example one encounters is terribly off center,
with its perforations cutting the design on at least one side and,
invariably, most have flaws ranging from minor to severe. Whenever a true
gem example appears at auction it always commands substantial premiums over
its catalog value and attracts considerable bidder excitement. In
addition to being a highly desirable and sought-after stamp off cover, the
One Cent Green Coil Waste on cover is a great rarity, as only four covers
are known bearing this stamp. Two are postcards, each bearing a single
stamp and both are used from New York City in 1924. There is a pair on an
envelope, also used from New York City in 1924, but the perforations on the
pair cut the design. The cover offered here is the finest of the four
recorded usages and is the only single franking on an envelope. However,
more importantly, the stamp used to frank this remarkable cover ranks among
the four best centered copies of Scott #594 that exist in any condition, on
or off cover. As such, we consider this envelope to be one of the most
important and desirable 20th century U.S. covers in existence. Signed by
Gordon Usticke (along with a Stanley Gibbons backstamp) and accompanied by
a 1988 PF certificate; ex-Ewing and Argentum.

example of one of the most difficult stamps of the 20th century, especially
well centered for this with margins clear to large all around, portion of
black c.d.s. cancel, small edge fault at top, barely detracting from its
otherwise very fine appearance; 1982 PF certificate.

centered and margined single, tied to 1924 Trans-Polar Flight card to
Norway by Washington machine cancel, Norwegian franking on the reverse tied
by Kings Bay c.d.s. for return to the sender, very fine; this special
flight was heavily promoted and many cards were sent from the United
States, however very few of them had this scarce coil waste issue, a most
interesting usage for a stamp that is rare on any cover; 1990 PF
certificate. (Image) |
