S.G. #2-3 |
S.G. #2-3, 1870 3p Black and 6p Black on rose
quadrille paper, positions 2 and 20, on the third of the three known
complete covers with the rose quadrille paper issues, this a small lady's
cover, the stamps and cover are in typical faulty condition, this one more
so than the other two with serious faults to the stamps, heavy edge wear
and portion of backflap missing, each of the two stamps with ms. "#" cancel
and the 3p is additionally tied by "DE 31 1870 Sydney/NSW" duplex, the
"NSW" portion of another strike of this duplex was used to tie the New
South Wales 3p Green (S.G. #158) at bottom left, posted to Melborne where
backstamped, on January 3, 1871. Like the other two covers this one also
has an interesting unique characteristic. At upper left it is endorsed
"with newspaper". Whether this was to indicate that it was attached to a
newspaper, or a message to the recipient that he should expect a newspaper
at the same time is not known. Additionally this cover is important in the
authentication of the previous cover. Both of these covers arrived in
Sydney, New South Wales on the same day, were handled in an identical
manner and each went to Melbourne, but each is from a different
correspondence and the covers have entirely different philatelic
provenance. Examination of the Sydney duplexes and the Melbourne backstamps
show numerous characteristics confirming that they were struck by the same
devices as would be expected and should be the case. Thus this cover, which
has the older provenance, confirms the authenticity of the Rewa cover.
Despite the condition problems, which are a given, this is a marvelous and
rare cover of the "Fiji Times Express"; ex-Sir Lacon Threlford and
"Missionary" collection; photocopy of 1975 RPS certificate and 1981 RPS
certificate being a duplicate of the previous (Scott #2-3). (Image) |

S.G. #9 var. |
S.G. #9 var., 1871 1/- Black on deep rose laid
batonne paper, position 11, an exquisite unused example of this scarce
shade variety, while the catalogs do not make mention of this shade it has
long been recognized that the second issue comes in two distinct colors,
the normal rose, which is similar to the first issue though usually a
little brighter, and a deep rose that the Robson Lowe Encyclopedia calls
rare, this stamp is an exceptional example with full rouletting on three
sides and with large matching margin at bottom showing about half the
rouletting, also completely sound, lacking the faults that nearly
all of the "Fiji Times Express" stamps have, extremely fine in all
respects; 1987 RPS certificate (Scott #10 var.; $1,500.00+). (Image) |

paper, position 11, used single with less commonly seen ms. "X" cancel,
attractive with strong rose color, full even margins all around though tiny
surface scrape in top left corner with the frame line slightly touched up,

S.G. #9, 1871 1/- Black on rose laid batonne
paper, position 12, mint single with complete rouletting at top and
bottom and most of it showing at left, the sheet edge at right is closer as
usual for this position, a fresh stamp with nice rose color, o.g., light
diagonal gum crease, otherwise very fine (Scott #10; $1,500.00). (Image) |
£1,200
SOLD for $230.00

S.G. #5 |
S.G. #5, 1871 1p Black on rose laid batonne
paper, position 13, an incredible mint single with large balanced
margins on all four sides, full rouletting is found on three sides, and
more amazing is the fact that the left margin is large enough that if there
were rouletting on the sheet edge it would show, this stamp then gives the
evidence that there was none, fresh with bright color, o.g., h.r., this
stamp has to be considered essentially sound for these issues as the only
flaws are a couple of nicks in the top margin, extremely fine and a
wonderful example of this position (Scott #6; $950.00). (Image) |
