#1, 136L4, 5c Red brown and 2c Red Swarts' City
Dispatch Post, on 1850 folded cover to Boston, 5c Red brown with three
large margins, just into the frame line at bottom (file fold barely
affecting the right margin), tied by ms. crossed lines, 2c Swarts' with
four large margins, neat central ms. cancel, right file fold through the
stamp, red "U.S. Express Mail/N.Y./N. York/May 20" c.d.s. below, very fine
appearance; an extremely rare usage, every aspect of which was to expedite
speedy service by use of the private carrier service in New York and the
railway U.S. Express service between New York and Boston, docketing
specifying that $100.00 was enclosed gives the reason for this
extraordinary service; this local is one of the very few local issues
listed by Scott as known used with the 5c 1847 Issue but unpriced; signed
by William O. Bilden sometime in the 1960's as guaranteed from an original
find that he made. (Image) |

9 var. |
#9 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut twice at top and
twice at bottom, position 79L1L, a gem mint example of the rarest of
all the recut varieties (only two positions of the sheet were recut in this
manner), possessing an extraordinary overall freshness, with strikingly
intense color and an outstanding impression on bright paper, its margins
are uncommonly large and symmetrical, full clean o.g., lightly hinged,
extremely fine; a highly desirable copy not only as a premium quality mint
#9, but whose recutting variety enhances its scarcity even further; 1998 PF
certificate; ex-Floyd. (Image) |

#11, 3c Dull red, plate 4, gem mint right
sheet-margin single with center line, other margins are large to huge as
well, showing small portions of the adjoining stamps at top and bottom,
strong dull red color in a much deeper shade than usual, full, though
slightly disturbed, o.g., extremely fine; while not rare, there were about
half the stamps produced from plate 4 as from any one of plates 1, 2 or 3,
and the center line has the widest spacing of any of the plates, making
select mint position examples, as this, particularly scarce. (Image) |

11 var. |
#11var., 3c Dull red, major cracked plate
variety, position 94L5, four-margin example, just clear at top to
extra-large margins on the other three sides, tied to petite cover to Open
Pond, Alabama by Columbus (Ga?) c.d.s., very fine; this is the best
position showing the largest of any cracks on the 3c 1851-57 Issues, with
the crack clearly showing the vertical length of the stamp from the bottom
selvage, through the bust and out the top between the "G" and "E" of
postage; an exceptionally desirable example on cover.
