347V |
#347V, 5c Blue imperforate coil, vertical format,
two singles applied by the simplex affixing machine using vertical
imperforate coils, to a registered printed return envelope of Wilhelm
Bergman, Secretary of the Swedish Mutual Aid Society Scandia in New York
City, this franking was certainly applied by the society to prepay the
postage and registry fee on a mailing made to members, stamps are tied by
indistinct registry ovals, with a "Brooklyn (Sta. No. 7)
N.Y./Registered/Apr.17,1909" c.d.s. on front and back as well as a New York
City registry oval backstamp of April 18, 1909, well documenting this as
the earliest documented usage of the 5c Blue imperforate coil, this
is a new discovery that is early for just the imperforate stamp being
within two months of the issuance of that value imperforate, but it
predates previous earliest known date of the imperforate coil by more than
two years, the two singles in fact constitute a pair, but because they were
applied by the affixing machine they are necessarily singles, what is most
remarkable is that they were affixed on the cover in such a way as to look
just like a pair, the edges at the top and bottom of the pair are a bit
irregular as is typical with the way this machine tore each stamp from the
roll, but each stamp shows the slightly diagonal scoring that is the
telltale sign of the simplex machine, cover has small edge tears at top,
otherwise very fine; an incredibly rare cover with neither used stamps nor
covers priced in Scott; its incredibly rarity plus unusually early usage
make it hard to imagine that an earlier cover will be found; 2005 APS and
PF certificates, the former stipulating the earliest documented use. (Image) |
