C14 |
#C14, $1.30 Graf Zeppelin, well centered stamp
tied to flown first day cover on the return leg of the flight, both
Zeppelin cachets as well as a German air post forwarding cachet,
backstamped Friedrichshafen on June 6, 1930, very fine; a most unusual and
rare first day cover, not only because it was flown on the last return
portion of the flight (very unusual), but when the post office processed
this cover they cacheted it with the usual outbound cachet, when they
realized their mistake (because being addressed to Germany with only $1.30
postage the only leg it could go on was the return flight), they tried to
cover up their mistake by scraping away the wrong features of the cachet
and touching it up with the same ink from the pad making this most
unusual. (Image) |

#C19, 6c Orange, right sheet-margin single, tied
to first day air mail cover by the "Baltimore/MD/Jun 30/1934" duplex,
additional 2c tied by Baltimore oval at left to make the 8c rate, this is
the true first day of issue, very fine; this is far rarer than its modest
catalog value implies as this is often confused with the common July 1st
date, which was the first day of the 6c air mail rate; a Fleetwood
facsimile tells the story of this FDC noting that only 43 covers were
known. (Image) |

C25-31 |
#C25-31, 6c-50c Air Transport award winning exhibit
collection of about 450 covers, this includes the exhibit collection
formed by the late Stephen Enkstrom, as well as another exhibit collection
that Mr. Enkstrom purchased just before his death, but never integrated
into his own exhibit, the collection shows the wide range of usages and
rates that this air post issue saw, with domestic usages including mixed
issue frankings (especially with the Presidential issues), advertising,
registered, special delivery, crash covers, usages to and from Alaska and
Hawaii, as well as other territorial and possessions, plus numerous foreign
destination usages to far-flung places throughout the world, diplomatic
mail, and usages from foreign destinations, but perhaps the most impressive
part of the collection is the myriad usages during World War II, with mail
to and from soldiers, showing auxiliary markings galore, plus
prisoner-of-war, Japanese internment camp mail, various censored, four
scarce "R.F." overprints correctly used, and more, also there are several
historically important covers such as a letter diverted from Pearl Harbor
on Dec. 7, 1941, covers relating to the development of the atomic bomb, and
a cover sent by a member of the Enola Gray crew on the day of the Hiroshima
bombing, plus there are many more interesting items to be found throughout,
when these two exhibits are properly integrated and mounted, it would
certainly form the basis of a gold medal collection of this increasing
popular issue. (imagea)

#C25-31, 6c-50c Air Transport postal history accumulation of nearly
500 covers, this is the portion of the Stephen Enkstrom estate that was not
put into his exhibit, many still have the original description where it was
purchased at auction or retail, includes several better 30c and 50c usages,
especially to foreign destinations, we note a few items priced at over
$100.00 each, although these were not part of Mr. Enkstrom's exhibit, there
are a number of seldom-seen items which could be included in an important
exhibit of this area. |
