#423, $1.00 Violet brown, bottom sheet-margin
vertical strip of three, along with 50c Violet (#422), 30c Orange red
(#420) and 10c Orange Yellow (#416), all mostly well centered, especially
the $1.00 and 50c values, tied by Washington, D.C. oval pmks. on 320mm x
180mm large piece of a registered package which is apparently the full
front, sent to the Federal Reserve Agent in San Francisco from the
Controller of the Currency, violet "Washington, D.C./Jul 15, 1915/
Registered" c.d.s., making this the July 15, 1915 earliest documented
usage of the scarce $1.00 value, very fine and impressive; an
interesting usage by the government to send currency through the post
office by registered mail; this front demonstrates the legitimate usage of
high denomination stamps, it is certainly a far more desirable commercial
usage of the dollar value than the more usual parcel tag usage; an
impressive showpiece which will greatly enhance an exhibition collection of
earliest documented usages or Washington-Franklin heads; 2000 APS
certificate; ex-Siskin, "Alpha".
