#84, 2c Black, "D" grill, single with natural
straight edge at right, tied to circular rate cover to Des Moines, Iowa by
"Minneapolis/Min/Mar. 17" (1868) duplex, insurance enclosure, stamp with
typical centering being just into the design at top, minor water staining
to the cover, fine usage; this rare grill is exceedingly rare on cover,
much more so than the modest premium given for an on-cover usage, most "D"
grills were not discovered until they were removed from the cover; this is
one of the few examples that has a well impressed grill that is easily
discernable from the face and therefore remains on the cover; 1988 PSE
certificate. (Image) |

overall freshness, with gorgeous bright color and a strong impression on
immaculate paper, marvelously well centered amid large margins, pristine
full o.g. that has been very lightly hinged, extremely fine; a remarkable

#89, 10c Green, "E" grill, a spectacular used
example that could very well be the finest used copy in existence,
as this stamp possesses gigantic margins all around and is incredibly well
centered within these immense borders, plus its color is deep and rich,
while its impression is razor-sharp, light segmented cork cancel, a truly
superb stamp; 1992 PF certificate and a 2004 PSE certificate (Superb 98
Jumbo; SMQ $2,750.00 for 98); this is by far the highest graded #89 in
the PSE population report; ex-"Connoisseur" Collection,
Morris. (Image) |

#95, 5c Brown, "F" grill, a brilliant "post
office" fresh mint example, possessing an overall mint "bloom" that is
rarely encountered on stamps of this vintage, with rich luxuriant color and
a strong impression, quite well centered, brilliant full o.g. which shows
the grill impression perfectly, never hinged, just a trace of slight
offset as often found on the small existing population of never hinged
examples, very fine and exceedingly choice; few Five Cent "F" Grills exist
in such pristine condition, those that do come from a small group of
multiples that were found in the past decade and have been broken up to
satisfy the demand for premium quality singles, virtually every example
from this cache has some trace of slight offset on the reverse; 1992 PF
certificate; ex-Lessin. (Image) |
