Sieger #64IV |
Sieger #64IV, 1930 Pan-American Flight, mixed
franking cover with five Chilean adhesives tied to a cover by "Correo
Aereo/Valparaiso/14. May. 30" c.d.s., plus Argentina 3.60P Zeppelin with
blue overprint and one other adhesive tied by Buenos Aires c.d.s., small
triangular flight cachet of Argentina and green Zeppelin machine backstamp
of Lakehurst of May 31, 1930, small water stain at bottom left, otherwise
very fine; covers with mixed franking in this fashion through Argentina
were not supposed to be accepted for transport by the airship, but this
cover did fly, as apparently a few similar covers did, as evidenced by the
proper backstamp on arrival of the Zeppelin in the United States, a rare
and interesting posting that is listed in this way by Sieger but not by
Michel (Sieger €900; Michel #66F var.).

Sieger #64XIII var. |
Sieger #64XIII var., 1930 Pan-American Flight, a
beautiful and incredibly rare registered mixed franking cover with
Germany, Czechoslovakian 1922 Second Air Posts cplt. and 10K Masarayk
commemorative tied by "Praha 82 Letiste/15. V. 30" c.d.s., plus two well
centered singles of each of the 2M and 4M German South America Flight
Zeppelins tied by the "Luftschiff/Graf Zeppelin/19. 5. 1930" on-board
c.d.s. at the beginning of the flight, Berlin transit and air cachet of
that city, flown on the round trip from Friedrichshafen to Friedrichshafen
with both the red German and violet American flight cachets, backstamped
Friedrichshafen on June 6, 1930, then back to Czechoslovakia to where it is
addressed, slight edge wear to the cover, very fine and attractive; an
amazingly rare and important cover of this most popular flight; not listed
by either Sieger or Michel; Sieger lists a posting from Czechoslovakia on
this flight but specifically states that it is one without mixed franking,
which are always secondary and less valuable than covers with the
appropriate stamps of the major countries on the flight, in this case
Germany; furthermore this is not just any leg of the Pan-American Flight
but the round trip, Michel, which lists the various countries that posted
covers on the various portions of the flight, lists Czechoslovakia only for
the flight to Lakehurst not specifying mixed franking with Germany, no
mention is made of any other leg, including the round trip, on which
Czechoslovakia covers were flown (Michel #68b).

Sieger #119E |
Sieger #119E, 1931 Polar flight, attractive photo
card of the DO-X with 1M Polar Flight overprinted Zeppelin with hyphen
omitted (position 41), tied by "Friedrichshafen/(Bodensee)/24. 7. 31."
c.d.s., red flight cachet, backstamped Leningrad, choice very fine; this
rare variety of the missing hyphen occurs in only one position of the
sheet, but it is also surprisingly difficult to find properly posted on a
flown cover or card of this flight, especially in such well-centered and
stellar quality; a 1931 Polar Flight showpiece; signed Zierer BPP (Sieger
€2,250; Michel #203a). (Image) |

Sieger #119Kc var. |
Sieger #119Kc var., 1931 Polar Flight, a lovely
and extremely rare on-board posting of this flight to its return to Berlin,
2M Polar flight overprinted Zeppelin single tied to card by
"Luftschiff/Graf Zeppelin/26. 7. 1931" c.d.s., unusual and rare color error
in the flight cachet which is a combination of a small portion of the rose
red ink of the normal cachet and large portion in the blackish violet ink
of the on-board cancel (apparently the airship's postal clerk used the
wrong ink pad to re-ink), backstamped Berlin on July 30, 1931 by two
different postmarks, very fine; what is little understood about this flight
is that the Zeppelin made two stops at Berlin, once on the outbound flight,
of which postings are common, and on the return flight which vary as to
when the card was posted on the Zeppelin, most of the covers for this
second delivery were done on the day or two before arrival, those posted
earlier in the flight are extremely rare, Sieger does not specify these
varieties but Michel does list them, the on-board cancel of July 26, 1931,
while the Zeppelin was en route from Leningrad to the Icebreaker
"Malyguin", is the rarest posting listed with very few known; this rare
posting combined with the error in the cachet are undoubtedly unique and
makes a great Zeppelin rarity; signed Zierer BPP (Michel #205d;
€5,000 for this specific posting).
