3bb |
#3bb, 1p Red, Die II, small "OS", bisect usage, a
horizontal pair, with one bisected vertically, tied by "Melbourne/1.JA.19"
machine cancel to O.H.M.S. imprinted cover, with additional "Education
Department/Melbourne" inscription at bottom left, addressed to Alphington,
cover opened roughly at top (with small pieces at edge missing) and a
vertical fold, still most unusual; the bisects, while unauthorized, were
often accepted, and a number of uses by the Education Department are
recorded, which may have been an attempt to reduce the stock of punctured
"OS" stamps, the single and bisect paying the 1 ½p letter rate; ex-Legge
and illustrated in the "The 1913 Penny Kangaroo of Australia" (page
30). (Image) |

4ba var. |
#4ba var., 1p Red, Die IIA, small "OS", double
print, used, light strikes of c.d.s., well centered, doubling of design
most apparent in lettering of "AUSTRALIA" and of frame line at top right,
very fine; the only recorded genuine example showing true double
printing; in the 1920's there was a discovery of approximately seven
examples with strong, very apparent, doubling of the entire design, however
these were subsequently determined (by Sydney stamp dealer A.C. Campe) to
be forgeries (by way of chemical transfer), while the copy offered here
does not have as readily apparent doubling, it is considered the only
genuine example found to date (incorrectly listed in ACSC under Die II as
#3ca at A$3,000, however this is the listing example and the only genuine
double print of the 1p). (Image) |

42ba var. |
#42ba var., 5/- Grey and chrome, small "OS",
brilliant mint single, nicely centered, o.g., l.h., very fine; at one time
the 5/- First Watermark with small "OS" punctures was listed as having been
issued, like its large "OS" counterpart, however many experts are now
questioning the status of this value as having been prepared and it has now
been delisted by the editors of the ACSC; offered on its own merits. (Image) |

 |
47b var. |
#47b var., 10/- Grey and pink, small "OS", lovely
mint example, fresh colors, well centered, o.g., l.h., very fine; while
some experts had questioned the status of both the 5/- and 10/- with small
"OS" punctures, resulting in both having been delisted by the ACSC catalog
editors, there is now new research that suggests that the 10/-, unlike the
5/-, was indeed prepared and available for use, it is our understanding
that when a new edition of the ACSC comes out, they will reinstate the
catalog listing for the 10/- with small "OS" punctures; clearly a very rare
stamp. (Image) |

can be found offered at auction, the small "OS" puncture is almost never
seen (A$7,500). (Image) |
