#E30, 1903 2p Edward VII large handpainted essay,
a unique and spectacular handpainted essay on card measuring (142x160mm),
featuring Edward VII central photographic vignette, surrounded by an ornate
frame executed in pen and ink, in bright blue and Chinese white, inscribed
"Queensland", with simulated perforations surrounding the whole; this
stunning essay has been dated to 1905 by Major H. Dormer Legge, but bears
many design similarities to the 1903 Vaughn series, suggesting it may be
his work, very fine; ex-Field, Kilfoyle and Abramovich (A$15,000). (Image) |

rules) a stamp-size photographic reproduction (#E112G) affixed below, card
signed on reverse by "Haereo" Luke's nom de plume, along with some
of his notations regarding the design's "Distinctive Australian Features",
some minor soiling, a remarkable and unique example of original artwork
from the Stamp Competition (for both the original artwork and the

#E61, 1911 Stamp Design Competition "Boomerang and
Map" original artwork by E.T. Luke, measuring 90x114mm, in India ink on
thick art board (228x284mm), with (as required by competition rules) a
stamp-size photographic reproduction (#E122F) affixed below, card signed by
"Haereo" Luke's nom de plume, numbered "106" at top, and affixed to
reverse at top is a separate sheet of paper written in the artist's hand
describing the features of his design; this marvelous original artwork is
accompanied by five various colored stamp-size "Pigmented Gum-Bichromate
prints" affixed to a separate piece of similar art board that has been
superimposed on the larger item, as Luke often supplied with his original
art work, these five essays (each unique) show the artwork's design in red,
then four other different colors in the same design but with blank value
squares at top and blank tablet at bottom (#E122A-E), this card also signed
"Haereo", some minor soiling; a most remarkable combination of unique stamp
competition essays and original art work (for the original artwork and the
six different stamp-size essays A$12,000).
