3PP(2)K |
#3PP(2)K, 1p Brown and blue, perforated 12½ plate
proof in the issued color of the £1 on gummed unwatermarked paper,
rather well centered, fresh colors, couple of faint thin specks of little
relevance given this proof's unique status, still fine; of special note is
that the kangaroo vignette has a "short" tail and a damaged foot; this dual
color combination in the color of the £1 certainly holds a special
distinction among these unique color trials, being that it is a bi-colored
print and not a paste-up, and is the only bi-colored color trial; an
extraordinary proof rarity as this is the only example known in these
colors (A$30,000 - a A$10,000 premium over all the others due to its
especially unique color combination).

3PP(2)L |
#3PP(2)L, 1p magenta pink, perforated 12½ plate proof
in an unadopted color on gummed unwatermarked paper, nicely centered,
bright color, minor thin spot, still very fine; this color was possibly
intended for the 2/6p denomination, originally intended for inclusion in
the series, but the £2 was substituted by mistake instead; an
extraordinary proof rarity as this is the only example known in this
color (A$20,000). (Image) |

The above eleven lots offered as one lot, the unique complete set of
eleven different 1p color trials submitted to the Postmaster General for
approval of colors, certainly among the most important and valuable
trial color proofs in philately; the lots will first be offered
individually, then offered as a single lot for one increment above the
total of the individual realizations. |

3PP(2)A |
#3PP(2)A, 1p Green, perforated 12½ plate proof in the
issued color of the ½p on unwatermarked white wove paper, imperforate
(as found on some of the known examples) at top, with this example showing
a portion of the marginal line at top, proving that these trial color
proofs were printed from a portion, at least, of a prepared printing plate,
bright color, small faults including a thin spot, of little relevance as
only nine examples of this trial color proof are recorded, including a
pair in the Royal Collection, fine (A$6,000).

3PP(2)A |
#3PP(2)A, 1p Green, perforated 12½ plate proof in the
issued color on unwatermarked white wove paper, light horizontal bend,
light soiling (trial cancel or extraneous ink from printer's fingers?) on
left portion, fine; accompanying enlarged photograph of the pair of the 1p
Green trial color proof from the Royal Collection suggests that the copy
offered here was originally adjacent to the right hand side of the Royal
pair, as the same soiling pattern and imperforate margin at top are
consistent, in addition the previous trial color offered in the above lot
may have, more than likely, come from the left hand side of the Royal pair,
further suggesting that these were printed in strips of four; one of
only nine examples recorded, of which two are contained in the pair housed
in the Royal Collection (A$6,000).

Official final approval of the 1p Color Trial, a
most remarkable historical artifact; following considerable criticism of
the proposed Kangaroo designs, the Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher, called
upon Postmaster General Frazer to furnish, in early September 1912, proofs
of the printed stamps for his final consideration, it is believed examples
of the final design, in approved base letter rate color, printed from the
first 1p plate manufactured, were supplied to this request; offered here is
the original envelope supplied to Andrew Fisher, which was thought to
contain four examples of the 1p color trial, the envelope having been
endorsed by by Fisher "Important/New Stamps/Andrew Fisher/4-9-12", envelope
with handsome "Commonwealth of Australia/Prime Minister" imprint in red on
reverse; this envelope and the proof which follows in the next lot together
make for a matchless exhibition page.

diminished on the issued stamp), this is the sole no monogram piece from
the left pane of Plate B, large margins, some light characteristic
wrinkling, small inclusion in bottom left stamp, very fine; a rare monogram
piece from the unique sheet of 480 (for a normal block A$1,200+). (Image) |

Die I examples from the same proof sheet, as there were three times as many
Die I examples on the sheet of 480; ex-Nelson (ACSC A$2,000+). (Image) |

FIRST DAY COVERS

F |
1/42 |
#1/42, ½p to 5/- First Watermark issue cplt.,
each value tied to individual matching earliest known usage and/or first
day cover by Sydney machine postmarks of various 1913 dates, each cover was
serviced and addressed by Frederick Hagen, a well known Sydney stamp
dealer, for a collector named Mr. L. Winter of Bathhurst, N.S.W., with the
exception of the ½p and 1p (which are very early usages, but not the
earliest recorded usages for these values - nevertheless are included for
keeping the matching "set" intact), all of the covers represent the
earliest known usage for each of the individual values, and in some cases
(specifically the 2p, 2½p, 3p, 4p and 2/-) have been determined to be
official first day usages and listed as such - at A$15,000 each - in the
Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue, the 5/- value has
been posted registered, and in addition to be the earliest known usage of
this value, it is the only recorded example of the 5/- First Watermark
on cover, most of the covers have foxing (toning) spots to varying
degrees (which could easily be professionally removed), some have only the
faintest trace of the foxing (particularly the high denomination covers),
otherwise this set is quite handsome and unique. There were no official
dates of issue of the various Kangaroo denominations, and stamps were
dispatched from the Stamp Printer to the various States only when fresh
supplies were required. In Sydney, the leading stamp dealer, Fred Hagen,
kept a close watch on activities at the Sydney G.P.O., and was able to
identify the dates on which the various values were first issued. All but
the ½p and 1p represent the earliest dates of issue for their respective
values anywhere in the Commonwealth and several have already been assigned
First Day issue status in the Australian Commonwealth Specialists'
Catalogue. It is anticipated with the appearance of this remarkable set
of covers at auction, the editors of the ACSC will add further listings, in
future editions of their catalog, of the other remaining values as either
first day covers or, at the very least, earliest recorded usages. These
are the only such covers in private hands, making these covers among the
most famous and valuable first day covers/earliest known usages of any
first issue set in the world. There is an incomplete set up to the 4p value
in the Royal Collection, whose dates match those found on the covers
present in this set. (imagea)
