1w/55x |
#1w/55x, ½p to £2 First Watermark issue,
"collector's set", a wonderful complete set of all 15 different values
in horizontal pairs, the 1/p to 5/- values cancelled-to-order (c.t.o.) with
central "Melbourne/DE 3 13" postmarks, the 10/- to £2 with "Specimen"
handstamps (these values are seen more frequently with "Specimen"
handstamps rather than with c.t.o. postmarks), such sets were prepared and
sold by the Australian Post Office to meet the high collector demand for
sets, however multiples such as these are are seldom encountered, in fact
this set of pairs may be the only surviving complete set, all
without gum except the 10/- (which is n.h. and especially rare thus) and
the £2, overall fine-very fine (for two sets of singles A$8,210+). (Image) |

1w/55w |
#1w/55w, ½p to £2 First Watermark issue, special
1924 Stockholm U.P.U. Congress Presentation set, a complete set of all
15 values, each being a single example with Melbourne c.t.o. postmarks
believed to be dated December 5, 1913 (the 10/- to £2 values are much
more elusive c.t.o. rather than with the more typical "Specimen" handstamps
seen on collector's sets), this set was prepared for presentation to the
delegates at the 1924 Stockholm U.P.U. Congress, being the first such
presentation made by the Australian Post Office, accompanied by the
original gold stamped presentation folder (which at one time also included
a set of George V stamps), all without gum except a few values including
the £1, all mostly fine-very fine, with the scarce £2 being
particularly choice (as c.t.o. singles A$8,380+).

1a/z |
#1a/z, ½p Green, watermark inverted, a remarkable
horizontal margin CA monogram block of twelve, being the bottom two
rows of the left-hand pane with margins on three sides, attractively
centered, o.g., nine stamps n.h., some minor creasing, overall very fine;
an exceedingly rare multiple, believed to be the largest of three
recorded CA monogram blocks with an inverted watermark; terribly
undercataloged as this block realized A$6,325 (including premium) in the
July 2005 sale of the Sir Gawaine Baillie collection; ex-Baillie
(A$1,500+). (Image) |

right corner JBC monogram strip of three, marvelously well centered,
bright and fresh, o.g., stamps n.h., minor h.r. in right sheet selvage
only, couple of separated perfs. at top between second and third stamps,
very fine and exceedingly choice; monogram pieces with watermarks inverted
are extremely rare, in fact, this is the only JBC monogram piece
recorded (A$2,500). (Image) |

1aa |
#1aa, ½p Green, watermark sideways, crown pointing to
left (when viewed from the face), used, Melbourne machine cancel, some
faults including irregular perforations and a thin creating a tiny hole,
fine appearance; one of the great rarities of the Kangaroo series, as
only two copies are recorded, both of which according to the ACSC are
machine cancelled and "imperfect" (A$20,000).

1ab |
#1ab, ½p Green, watermark sideways, crown pointing to
right (when viewed from the face), attractively centered and margined,
neat portion of "(T)oorak, (Vic.)/11.NO.13" c.d.s., very fine; a
fabulous rarity of not only Australia, but of the entire British
Commonwealth, as this is the sole recorded example; recent auction
realizations for important watermark errors of the British Commonwealth
have routinely been realizing impressive prices, often well in excess of
their current catalog values in either Stanley Gibbons or in their
corresponding specialized catalogs; 1989 BPA certificate (A$30,000). (Image) |

1b |
#1b, ½p Green, imperforate at base, bottom right
corner margin block of four, bottom two stamps being the error, typical
irregular perforations, bright color, o.g., neatly folded along vertical
row of perforations between right stamps and sheet selvage, diagonal crease
in bottom sheet selvage well away from stamps, fine-very fine; an important
error multiple; ex-Rasmussen, Cato and McNess (A$10,000+). (Image) |
Est. 5,000-7,500
SOLD for $6,750.00

  |
1b/z |
#1b/z, ½p Green, imperforate at base, a highly
important bottom left corner margin CA monogram block of six, the
bottom three stamps being the error, as they are completely imperforate
between the stamps and sheet selvage, o.g., couple of minor h.r.'s (in top
stamps and in bottom sheet selvage, the three error stamps are n.h.),
lightly folded along center row of horizontal perforations, fine-very fine;
of the four CA monogram pieces of this error, only two remain in private
hands, the block of six offered here from the Gray collection and a
block of twelve which realized A$74,500 (including premium) in the July
2005 sale of the Sir Gawaine Baillie collection (A$20,000; clearly
undercataloged as evidenced by the Baillie realization). (Image) |
Est. 20,000-30,000
SOLD for $32,500.00

1b var. |
#1b var., ½p Green, imperforate at top, used
horizontal pair, apparently being imperforate between stamps and partial
sheet selvage, neat 1914 machine cancel, fine-very fine; the only
recorded example of this error; whether or not this imperforate error
was the result of a true lack of perforations between the stamp and
selvage, or is the result simply of jumped perforations, cannot be
verified, nonetheless the size of the margin at top without any
perforations would suggest this is a true error, and is unlisted thus in
the ACSC. (Image) |

fine (A$400+). (Image) |

 |
1bb |
#1bb, ½p Green, double perforations, horizontal
pair, with double perforations around all four sides, most striking and
especially scarce thus, bright and fresh, o.g., l.h., very fine;
ex-Legge. (A$400+). (Image) |
Est. 200-300
SOLD for $375.00

1bb/zd |
#1bb/zd, ½p Green, double perforations, bottom
right corner margin no monogram strip of three from Plate 1, with
all three stamps displaying double perforations on all four sides, being
the only recorded no monogram piece with double perforations on all four
sides, unused, without gum, couple of trivial selvage flaws and mild
bend in left stamp, still very fine and striking; a unique variety in a
no monogram strip; a perfect exhibition piece; it is likely that this
no monogram strip and the horizontal pair offered in the previous lot come
from the same sheet; ex-Legge (catalogs A$600 as singles alone,
unpriced as a no monogram unit). (Image) |
Est. 750-1,000
