format, attractive single being well centered with large margins,
October 21, 1910 earliest documented usage, stamp applied by Simplex
affixing machine and tied to Schoverling Daly and Gales Sportsman's
Supplies corner card cover by New York, N.Y. machine cancel, backstamped
Suffolk, Va. the next day, some contemporaneous doodling, mostly on the
reverse, very fine; this government issued coil actually predates the sheet
imperforates by six weeks and is in fact the earliest documented usage
of any single line watermarked stamp, making this a highly important
cover for the postal history collector of the Washington-Franklin issues;
2003 APS certificate; ex-"Alpha".

perf. 12 vert., a marvelous and choice appearing used example of this rare
and sought after coil, which was issued specifically for use by the Bell
Pharmaceutical Co. to mail their samples to doctors, the centering is
remarkable, being virtually perfect amid considerably larger margins than
typically found, additionally its color is the characteristic deep violet
shade, neat and unobtrusive wavy line machine postmark, small reinforced
diagonal crease at top center (which are endemic to virtually all known
copies) and certainly not affecting this stamp's extraordinary extremely
fine appearance; a highly desirable example of this major 20th century coil
rarity, certainly among the best centered and margined available of the
approximately 75 known used copies recorded; 2002 PF certificate. (Image) |
