1435 Pbl 1898 2c Black, blue and carmine Imperial Penny Postage, imperforate plate proof on stamp paper in the issued colors, a full top left corner block of 25 being a full
quarter-sheet from the unissued plate 4, American Bank Note Co. Ottawa impr1898 2c Black, blue and carmine Imperial Penny Postage, imperforate plate proof on stamp paper in the issued colors, a full top left corner block of 25 being a full quarter-sheet from the unissued plate 4, "American Bank Note Co. Ottawa" imprint at top, large selvages and margins all around showing most of the crossed center lines in the bottom right corner, light vertical and horizontal creases affecting the center column and the next to the bottom horizontal row, extremely attractive and otherwise very fine. This quarter sheet and the quarter sheet in the next lot taken from the same sheet are the only known proofs or stamps from plate 4 in private hands. The definitive evidence for this identification is found not only in a number of plating features published in an article by the collector in Maple Leaves April 1992, Whole no. 237, pp303-305, but has now been confirmed by a unique major re-entry discovered by Ralph E. Trimble, President of the Canadian Re-Entry Study Group and published in the Re-entry Study Group Newsletter. He discovered by studying the plate 4 proof sheet in the Canadian Postal Archives that position 43 (the bottom center stamp in this quarter sheet) has a distinctive re-entry shifted 3mm down that puts diagonal dashes from the top cable frame line in the white space below "Canada" of the top inscription. This confirms beyond a doubt that this block and its companion in the next lot are from plate 4.It has been mentioned in the literature for years that a mystery unissued plate 4 existed but no one had ever found an example until the sheet of proofs was found in the Canadian Postal Archives. It was not until the American Bank Note Co. archives were sold in 1990 that these two blocks of 25 came into private hands. The block here is not only one of only two such blocks that are the only known stamps or proofs from this plate available, but furthermore the major re-entry in position 43 is the only known example available to collectors; 1991 Greene Foundation certificate; ex-American Bank Note Co. archives.
