Pauahi Bishop", since these are all Hawaiian language leases it is quite possible that she signed them this way emphasizing her Hawaiian name; a rare and desirable autograph of Princess Pauahi. Pauahi Bishop" and which S.M Damon signed in his hand for Charles Bishop as his attorney, all have been notarized on the reverse by John H. Paty stating that the original and this duplicate were executed and properly certified before him, few minor document flaws including a couple with small tone spots, most are fresh and attractive, fine-very fine; despite the quantity that are offered here, the sale of the Damon Estate is a once-in-a-lifetime event and each of these documents possesses a rare signature of Princess Pauahi. 905 R6 Charles R. Bishop and Samuel M. Damon 1895 important and unique document signed for the sale of the banking business of Bishop & Co, an agreement between Charles Bishop and S.M. Damon 1895 important and unique document signed for the sale of the banking business of Bishop & Co, an agreement between Charles Bishop and S.M. Damon for Damon to buy the interest of the partnership that existed between them known as Bishop & Co., the sales price was $800,000.00 to Bishop from Damon, the stamp duty tax due on this transaction was $4,000.00 at the rate of $5.00 for each $1,000.00 of sales price, for the payment of this a total of 80 of the scarce $50.00 Slate blue and carmine revenue stamps (#R6) were applied in the form of strips of three, four, two strips of five and a strip of nine, plus a block of 54 (9x6), these were applied to the reverse of two pages of the agreement, stamps are cancelled with boxed violet "Cancelled" handstamps, the block is tied by "Paid/Honolulu, H I/May 30 1895" handstamp, normal document folds lightly affect three of the six rows in the block, the strip of three and one strip of five, the document is dated April 4, 1895 and executed in San Francisco, California, signed "Chas. R. Bishop" and "S.M. Damon" and witnessed by J.F. Soper, the Vice and Deputy Hawaiian Consul-General in San Francisco with lovely embossed arms of the Hawaiian Consul-General on red adhesive seal, very fine.Charles Bishop and Samuel Damon were partners in the banking company of Bishop & Co. which became First Hawaiian Bank in Honolulu. The purpose of the transaction was for Charles Bishop to sell his interest as a partner in the bank to his partner Mr. Damon. The partnership was being dissolved in conjunction with this purchase and three auxiliary documents are present including a June 1, 1895 dissolution of partnership and a similar previous 1892 document for the dissolution of a partnership between Charles Bishop, Samuel Damon and John H. Paty doing business as Bishop & Co. This, in effect, was the formation of the co-partnership of Charles Bishop and Samuel Damon doing business by the same name that was now being sold. All have the appropriate signatures of the principals involved. Also includes a legal opinion by attorney Francis Hatch that the $4,000.00 Stamp Duty was applicable, though more excessive than the law had contemplated, and that there might be ways to structure it to reduce the amount but that he recommended for clear bill of sale that the tax be paid.This sale agreement is the largest financial transaction in nineteenth century Hawaii. The resulting document with the payment of $4,000.00 Stamp Duty is the largest amount of Hawaiian revenue stamps to be affixed to any document. Furthermore the block of 54 of the $50.00 Slate blue and carmine is the largest known used multiple of this scarce revenue of which only 3,500 stamps were issued. 906 Charles Reed Bishop 1846-48 autograph documents signed, a most interesting pair of accounting booklets for moneys received and expenses, measuring approximately 4 x 6 and all in Bishops own hand, the earliest of the two has six pages removCharles Reed Bishop 1846-48 autograph documents signed, a most interesting pair of accounting booklets for moneys received and expenses, measuring approximately 4" x 6" and all in Bishop's own hand, the earliest of the two has six pages removed from the front, apparently not relating to accounting or prior to his arriving in Hawaii, the first complete page is headed "Arrived at Honolulu, Oahu/Octr. 12th 1846/Cash on hand $265.00" this journal goes through May 25, 1847, the second picks up from this date and goes to June, 1848, the front and back covers are inscribed "Memorandum Expenses" and on the reverse it is signed "Chas. R. Bishop/Honolulu", everything is listed in these books on which a young man newly arrived in Hawaii needed to spend money, it ranges from the most mundane items as food, clothing and personal items to more substantial expenses as horse and saddle, writing desk, etc., even fireworks, the last pages of the second book have a log of letters written to various individuals, books show wear but very fine for this type of document from this period; Charles Bishop upon arrival in Hawaii started in a job of posting government books, he immediatly became active in business and politics eventually forming a firm that became the First Hawaiian Bank, he was made a noble, life member of upper house of the Legislature and a member of the privy council to four kings and one queen; a most interesting and early set of autographed books that give a picture of both the man and mid-19th century Hawaii. Dowsett on September 10, 1880 in Cartwrght's hand and signed "Alxr. J. Cartwright" with two vertical pairs of 50c Yellow orange revenue tied (#R2, one stamp in each pair affected by a normal document fold), this again was re-assigned to S.M. Damon on December 5, 1894 and signed "J.I. Dowsett" with a $1.00 Black revenue stamp (#R2) tied, the document is attractive and very fine; born in 1820, Cartwright in his early years is officially credited by the U.S. Congress in 1953 with inventing the game of baseball when in 1842 he organized the Knickerbocker Baseball Club (after the Knickerbocker Fire Engine Company) in New York City, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938; migrating westward with the California gold rush, he ended up in Hawaii where he spent the rest of his life as a successful business man, he promoted baseball wherever he went and organized the first baseball league in Hawaii, his Hawaiian leagues became the model for the American and National leagues of today, he was also the founder of the Honolulu fire department in 1851; a lovely autographed document of a man who contributed much to American culture and Hawaii with the additional signature of the famous Hawaiian businessman and whaler Samuel I. Damon", which was his standard legal signature, includes five complete deeds or mortgages with Hawaiian revenue stamps including three $10.00 Reddish brown and green and a pair of the $5.00 Vermilion and violet blue (#R4, 5, 16), one with additional U.S. revenue, also six checks of the Banking House of Bishop & Co. signed by Damon, the other five documents are similar deeds or mortgages signed by both "S.M. Damon" and his wife, "Hattie M. Damon", which was her usual signature, though she occasionally used "H. M. Damon" as one document shows, either way her signature is seen with considerable less frequency than her husband's, four of these documents have revenues, one 1913 partition deed has an embossed seal "Not Liable to Stamp Duty", a very few stamps are affected by normal document folds, overall fine-very fine.
