23, 1859 to England bs. A choice 2d overpayment of the 10d Cunard rate &
the only such example recorded.NOTE: It is interesting to note that this
correspondence (Brooksbank) consists of 12 covers all of which are overpaid
from Barrie, apparently the postmaster did not have any 10d stamps at the
time. Pairs of this stamp are quite rare, especially on cover. A choice
rarity. (Image) |

margins, the other barely into LR to large margins, tied by faint grid 16
cancels to Registered cover from Hamilton, June 16, 1859 to England hs. The

the fact that Pentonville is a prison town.) Another very rare Registered

address could be restored.) (Image) |

#1,2. 3d Red on laid paper, used with 6d Slate Violet on
laid paper, 2 copies, a dry print variety with huge margins around, 1
barely touched to huge margins, all with strong laid lines, used on neat
cover from Montreal, Jun 20, 1852 to North Wales bs. A phenomenal cover &
the only cover recorded bearing both first issue (laid paper) stamps. There
are very few covers recorded to this autonomous region in England, this
example was carried by the Cunard line. The rate was short paid 1d (there
was no way that this rate could be prepaid fully by stamps - the 1/2d value
was still 3-1/2 years from issuance). Another Special Showpiece cover.
This fabulous cover was offered at $40,000.00 in 1987), when the
"Foxbridge" colln was brought to market..

#2,4. 6d Deep Slate Violet on laid paper, horiz pair,
strong laid lines, just in at LR to large margins used with 3d Brown Red on
medium wove paper, clear to huge margins, with next stamp showing at T,
neatly tied by light target cancels to cover (bit toned & light file fold
just affecting the Rt 6d) from Quebec Aug 7, 1852 (Red cds) to England bs
with Red Liverpool tombstone. This unique usage, is similar to the previous
lot. However, the Post Office recognized the proper short payment. The
marvelous companion to the previous lot.

3, all of excellent color, the L stamp is slightly cut into LR with the
others barely touched to large margins, all are tied by target cancels to
Folded Letter from STEAMBOAT LETTER QUEBEC, Sept 17, 1853 to England bs.
The cover was short paid 1d for the 1/4d Packet rate & so was noted as More
to Pay 1. Another unique & spectacular cover that is the showpiece of
Steamboat letters. (Image) |

#7. 10d Blue on thin wove paper, barely touching LR to
very large margins, neatly tied by target cancel to cover (file fold) from
Ancaster, Mar 8, 1855 to Scotland bs & bearing the scarce Conveyed By
United States Packet hs as well as More to Pay 6. The cover was prepaid the
Cunard rate but apparently arrived too late & was directed via the U.S.
Collins Line. The additional rate of 6d was collected upon delivery. The
very rare so-called Crimean War Rate & the only short paid, rerouted next
Packet Principle treated cover directed to the US Packet line. Another
great rate cover. (Image) |

#4xi,7,7iii. 3d Scarlet Vermilion, horiz pair (L stamp
with tiny tear at L), used with 10d Blue on thin paper, the Posn #1 Major
Reentry (lightly creased), tied by target cancels to pristine cover from
Hamilton, Jan. 29, 1855 which, per the notation UL, was directed to go by
the British Packet (Cunard) Line & thusly was rated 8d PAID 10 in Red. The
cover, however, had stamps applied that prepaid the 16d U.S. Packet
(Collins Line) rate. The only such example recorded, this cover was
actually carried by the less expensive, (10d) Cunard, route. An interesting
example of overpayment of the rare U.S. Packet rate obviously caused by the
disruption of routes as a result of the British entry into war in the
Crimea. An exceptional companion to lot #259.
