#4d,7. 3d Orange Red on thin paper, vert pair +10d
Bright Blue on thin paper, tied by target cancel & Superb strike of the
Perth cds, dated Dec 4, 1855 to small Blue cover (trivial edge toning & 2
staple holes) to Scotland (bs). This cover also bears the seldom seen
Conveyed by U.S. Packet hs. A choice example of the 1/4d, so called Crimean
War rate. This provided senders the more expensive routing via N.Y. and the
Collins Line, which, undoubtedly due to the very high price, was seldom
used. A most attractive example & one of the finest of the 3 examples
recorded this franking & the only example to bear the US Packet hs. Rare &

Stampless Cover from Guelph, U.C., Sept 27, 1858 to
England from where it was returned to Guelph. Originally rated 8d Stg(10d
Cy) collect then was noted as First-Postage/Not-Paid hs to insure that the
charge for both ways was collected upon the return to Guelph. The cover
was then rerated 1/8 Cy to cover the cost of both Cunard voyages(10d Cy
each way). A spectacularly rare & attractive cover. The only example of

#7a. 10d Bright Blue on thick paper, just in to huge
margins, barely tied by indistinguishable cancel to short paid cover from
Toronto, May 16, 1859 to Scotland bs. The letter was double weight & was
noted "More to Pay 1/2" (8d Stg postage + 6d Stg penalty for short
payment). Thus the cover cost a total of 27-1/2d currency. This penalty
rate ended June 30, 1859. A wonderful Postage Due cover & the only example
