390 ? image#4iv. 3d Scarlet Vermilion on thin oily paper, with 3 large margins, cut into at L tied to neat Short Paid cover from Millbank, Dec 11, 1855 to New York, prepaid only 3d, the Postmaster noted & cancelled the Red Canada Paid 10 Cts cross border marking then applied the Black Canada 10 Cts pmk to denote non prepayment. The cover was not noted with any due mkgs & was apparently delivered w/o charge at New York. Of the 8 covers recorded short paid, only 2 were not treated as due by the US Postmaster, as is the case here. NOTE: The other realized $2250 hammer in our June sale. Rare & F-VF. Ex: Wilkinson.
