1018 image* BOLIVIA. 1867-1920. NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH CENTURY PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP COLLECTION. The use of postal markings on covers without stamps did not stop with the issuance of the first stamps in 1867, many smaller Post Offices did not regularly have stamps and even the larger Post Offices resorted to handstamps for various reasons and because of temporary stamp shortage. This collection of stampless covers has a total of over 200 covers and entire folded letters plus a few fronts mounted on pages and housed in six deluxe custom albums. These covers fall into several general periods including the mid to late 1870's, which often are pre-stamp markings that were used before stamps, but also with new markings appearing, antoher group seems to appear in the mid 1880's which are often new types of handstamps, then there are some that go into about the first quarter of the 20th century. What is apparent is that there was no regulation that required the use of stamps so letters could be paid, a town postmark was then applied and sometimes an additional FRANCA marking if it was not already in the postmark. There are far too many to list here but some more interesting items we note are a negative circular handstamp of Viacha, a rare and unusual ornate handstamp of Colquechaca are examples of the many interesting markings found in this collection. Some are quite rare with only a very few examples known. Another reason for stampless in this period involves foreign mail destinations to other South American countries and elsewhere. Also three covers to the United States in the late 1860's that were handled by forwarding agents. Condition varies only slightly with the vast majority being clean and fine-very fine or better, a lovely collection of this era that documents many markings being used in the early stamp period. Ex ORTIZ-PATIÑO collection. (Image) CLOSED

1019 image* BOLIVIA. 1875. LA CHIMBA (Bolivia) to LIVERPOOL. Cover with two full strikes of this rare ship marking CORREOS DE LA CHIMBA/BOLIVIA tying a Great Britain 6p. grey, plate 14, right wing-margin strip of three, matching black ornate CANCELADO and boxed FRANCA. The routing of this cover is a bit unusual in that it has a September 25th Valparaiso c.d.s. on the reverse and ms. per 'Liguira', ship of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company for direct transmission from Valparaiso to Liverpool, however it also has a British Post Office Callao c.d.s. of October 6th where it evidently entered the British system and it is unclear why it went so far south to only go back north again,back- stamped Liverpool, small edge flaws to the left stamp otherwise very fine and attractive. An exceptional and very rare combination of the Bolivian Post Office and the British Postal Agency. (Image) CLOSED

1020 image* BOLIVIA. 1877. TOCOPILLA to CAMBORNE (England). Franked with Great Britain 6p. grey, plate 14, and 1/- green, plate 12 (S.G. Callao Z46, Z54). The stamps were applied in Tocopilla (Bolivia) and pen cancelled plus a blue oval CANCELADO and CORREOS DE TOCOPILLA/FRANCO blue circular handstamp, carried by post to Callao and turned over to the British Post Office where the stamps were tied by a single strike of the C38 numeral cancel and a A/CALLAO/DE 13 77 c.d.s. of that office was applied to the reverse backstamped. Some age stains and edge tears to the cover, otherwise fine. The sender had taken the adhesives to Tocopilla and applied them there thus the pen and Bolivian cancellations. Extremely rare combination cover of the Bolivian Post Office and British Postal Agency. Cert. B. MOORHOUSE. Ex GLASCO. (Image) CLOSED
