1101 image* CANADA. 1881 (Aug). ST. MORITZ to HAMILTON (Province Ontario) redirected to New Jersey (United States). Single weight letter from St. Moritz to Hamilton, Canadian Province of Ontario. Correct single weight franking of 25 rappen for UPU member states. Canada joined the UPU on July 1, 1876. UPON arrival redirected to the United States under franking of 3 cents Canadian postage. Entire letter from Gibraltar to the Dordogne, France with fine strike of the elusive small curved arc (23x3.5mm) 'GIBRALTAR' handstamp struck in red at lower left of entire. At right is the 'Outre-Mer Marseille' entry marking, also in red. Reverse with transits and arrival (March 23). A great rarity of Gibraltar Postal History, 'one example is recorded in black, and six in red' (Geoffrey Osborn). This example is the latest of the known dates, a photocopy of Osborn's chapter on this handstamp accompanies the lot. (Image) CLOSED

1103 image* COSTA DE ORO. 1859 (Sept 6). Entire letter from St. George D'Elmina to Bristol, mailed at Cape Coast Castle with good strike of 'CAPE-COAST-CASTLE' cds in black (Sept 19). Manuscript 1d. credit due to Gold Coast at top. Carried on the 'Athenian' and landed at Liverpool with reverse showing 'Liverpool / Br. Packet' cds (Oct 13) and struck with scarce usage of 'd6' charge marking in black (per « ounce, in use on Gold Coast letters from Sept. 1859 until May 1860). The earliest recorded use of the Cape Coast datestamp by Proud and extremely rare. Ex collection Colonel Danson (RL, 1971) and Sir Adrian Cadbury.
Elmina was a Dutch settlement until sold to Britain in 1872.

Manuscript '6d.' in red crayon for « ounce Contract rate and framed tombstone 'Paid / Liverpool / Ship' (Robertson S19a) datestamp of transit in red.
