Pre-payment to France was not required, carried by the steamer "Imperatrice Eugenie", Ligne B postmark, plus transit and arrival markings on back, fine and splendid cover, one of only three recorded usages of a Maximilian Issue together with a French stamp, illustrated in Mexican Maritime Mail (plate A), with 1992 Mepsi cert. 737 C image1871 FL from Mexico City, May 27 to Madrid, franked with 50c Hidalgo (1868 issue), sent through the French Consular Agency at Veracruz, June 13th per steamer "France" (the letter was initially endorsed "Paquete Ingles", then crossed out to "Frances"), with 80c carmine (Bordeaux Issue, margins all around except in at lower left) applied over the Mexican adhesive and cancelled with anchor (French postage had to be pre-paid to France), boxed "PP" handstamp (indicating paid to port), also "1,Peseta" handstamp, due for Spanish internal mail. This is the only recorded Bordeaux cover from Mexico (Image) $7,500

739 C image1872 Cover from Veracruz, 17 February to Genova, franked with 12c Hidalgo, via the Ligne B packet "Guadeloupe" arriving St. Nazaire March 6th, with credit of 22 decimes to France, handstamped with the French exchange marking "F 30" for mail from the United States to Switzerland. This was applied in error, as a result of misreading the address "Genova" for "Geneva" (even then, "F29" would have been the correct mark for mail from Mexico). The cover arrived in Geneva, Switzerland on March 17th, was resent to Genova, arriving on March 18th where it was charged 2,20 lire postage due, applying pair of 10c and 2x1L adhesives. A great cover, ex-David Warham collection, illustrated in Mexican Maritime Mail (page 307) (Image) $1,500
