MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1865 huge franking from Aus

629 C image1865 Large cover (opened for display) from Wiener Neustadt, Austria, 13 May to Mexico, franked with 3kr green (2), 10kr blue (2) and 15kr brown (7) for a total of 131kr, addressed to a lieutenant in the Hussar regiment of Austrian Volunteers at Puebla, Mexico. The letter was intended to be sent via Paris and St. Nazaire, but the French ship had departed (red boxed "aprŠs le depart" hs), so it was sent instead by British ship "Seine" departing Southampton May 17th and arriving at St. Thomas May 31st, then by "Conway" departing June 17th, with a stop at Puerto Rico, arriving at Veracruz June 27th. The 1/2r concessionary rate (applied by a black handstamp) was charged - the only recorded instance of this on inbound mail. A remarkable cover, of importance to both Mexican and Austrian philately (Image) $10,000

The rate for ordinary letters carried on French ships was 20 centimes, on British ships, 50 centimes. A Bureau "A" cover to Paris, carried by British ships ("V. Angl." cds): "Eider" to St. Thomas (October 12) and "Shannon" to England, double rate (1fr) paid to destination ("P.D.") with French 20c and 2x40c cancelled "CEM A" in Lozenge, arriving October 30th, with both black and red cds, fine and attractive cover, signed Goebel (Image) $1,000

638 C 42,45 image1868 Outer FL (side panels missing) from Mexico City, March 13 to Coruna, Spain, with unusual 4½ reales franking ("Gothic Mexico" Issue), by "Danube" to St. Thomas and "Atrato" to the new arrival port of Plymouth (April 28th), then through France to Spain. Rated "4Rs." on arrival, possibly unique with this franking, ex-Marquis de Fayolle.
