Allan Line Usage. Clear strike of French entry datestamp on folded
letter from Boston to Cognac, France, "Boston 9 Dec. 17" debit datestamps,
sender's directive "by the Anglo Saxon" and sent on that Allan Line
ship, "8" decimes due handstamp, Very Fine, rare use of this French entry
marking, the U.S. contracted with the Canadian Allan Line to carry mails to
France in Nov. 1859, Richard Winters records only two examples of this
marking used in that context, with page describing rate and route (Image) |

singles originally forming a pair of 25c, pair of 1fr, large margins to in
incl. 1fr with sheet margin at left, tied by diamond roller cancel,
"Paris 26 Fevr. 1852" double-circle datestamp on tissue cover to Andover
Mass., New York 5c due marking, some wear, Very Fine, scarce rate, franked
to pay double the rate in France for letters between 7-1/2 grams and under
15 grams, rated as a single rate of under -1/2 oz. for the U.S. postage to
destination, on page describing rate and route

Francisco Cal. Folded letter written by two different persons,
datelined October 28 and October 29 from Paris, addressed to Edward
Maussenet in care of Hentsch & Berton, San Francisco, endorsed "Par
Ballon Monte" and carried on the voyage of Le Fulton, "Paris R.
St. Lazare 5e 29 Oct. 70" double-circle datestamp, large dotted star
cancels tying 25c and pair of 30c Napoleon Laureated, red "London Paid 4 No
70" transit also ties pair, matching "2 Cents" credit handstamp, red "San
Francisco Paid All Nov. 22" receiving datestamp, excellent condition with
fully readable letter in French filled with commentary on the situation in
ParisVERY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT COVER, WHICH IS REPORTED TO BE ONE OF
ONLY SIX "BALLON MONTE" COVERS TO CALIFORNIA. With 1995 Robineau
