FRENCH MARITIME AND TRANSATLANTIC MAILS. Massive collection of more
than 700 covers on annotated exhibit pages contained in 13 albums arranged
by category, comprising French Maritime Postal History (3 volumes,
254 covers) incl. colonial ship letters from numerous places with "Colonies
Par Le Havre" and "Pays d'Outremer" handstamps, "Colonies & Art."
accountancy handstamps, Lignes de L'Estuaire de la Loire and other internal
waterway markings, extensive group of French Mediterranean covers incl.
fumigated mail, La Compagnie Fraissinet, Egyptian and Syrian mail,
"FR/2f40c" oval, "Poste Francaise D'Alep" two-line handstamp, U.S.
depreciated currency markings, Les Paquebots de la Mediterranee (several
with French frankings), Ligne X first voyage, Expeditionary Army of Africa
markings, British Packet letters from Mauritius to France, Peninsular &

period, first westbound voyage under 1857 U.S.-French treaty, variety of
1857 treaty rate mail incl. Havana to France via U.S. Mail Steamship Co.'s
Star of the West (last contract voyage), 1859 San Francisco to
France via Panama, several later from S.F. via PMSS CO., 1860's stampless
and U.S. or French frankings, wreck of the HAPAG Germania, NGL with
"G.B./Art. 33" handstamp, 4c Open Mail via England rate, 1873-74 10c rates
with Bank Note frankings, 1875 9c and 50 centimes rates (U.S. and French
frankings), depreciated currency, S.S. Europe salvaged cover,
special study of Cuban and Spanish mails (mostly U.S. related, some
French), every cover has been carefully analyzed with extensive information
on routes, rates and markings, many with transcripts of letters and
supporting articles/correspondence, the covers themselves are clean and
presentable, many with a labyrinth of colorful transit markings, a
substantial number of stamp frankings incl. U.S., France, Italy, Mauritius,
and French Colonies -- in addition to the 700+ covers, this offering
presents a lifetime of study by Arthur White, which has been meticulously
incorporated into the write-ups -- the value of the covers, if acquired
individually thru dealers or small auctions, could run well into the tens
of thousands of dollars |
