CRIMEAN WAR, 1856, William Hadfield * Constantinople. Clear strike of
forwarder's handstamp with ship's illustration on back of blue 1856 folded
letter to Marseilles, France, red "Post-Office British-Army MY 29
1856" and transit backstamps, contents concern Crimean War and
state in part "Enclosed I send you a judgement pronounced by a Survey of
two Captains appointed by the Naval Commissioner at Kamiesch.", faint
horizontal file fold, Very Fine strike of this rare forwarder's marking
used during the Crimean War, accompanied by exhibit page giving detailed
explanation of rate and route (Image) |

pages in three albums, mainly 18th and 19th Century with wide range of
markings, origins and destinations, one volume of "Ship Letter" handstamps
from 1788 thru 1870's incl. straightlines and Crown Ovals of Dover, Deal,
Gravesend, Greenock, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Liverpool and London, Robert R.
Hunter Consul handstamp on two ship letters to U.S., Hudson News Room and
Gilpin ovals, a second volume of Ship Letter mail incl. 1772 "BARBA/DOES"
handstamp with "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LRE", 1846 Cape of Good Hope to France via
England with scarce "PACKET-LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" handstamp, 1768
"WEYMOUTH/SHIP LRE", 1815 "Postpaid Withdrawn Ship Letter" Crown Circle
backstamp, group of "India Letter" handstamps, third volume contains Packet
Letters incl. mail to and from Australasia (some with G.B. or Australian
States frankings), fumigated mail, "Colombo Steam Letter" handstamp, St.
Thomas B.P.O. datestamp, several unusual 1890's frankings from distant
places, all are carefully described with lots of information regarding
routes and rates, stampless in excellent condition, stamped covers have
minor faults, a wonderful collection of covers representing the
far-reaching British Empire |
