U.S.-China and South America Mails--The Shearman Correspondence.
1851-62, ten covers on annotated exhibit pages in album, all from the
Shearman correspondence to the U.S. from various origins incl. Manila,
Singapore, Chinca Islands, "Whampoa" China and Macao, incl. 1851 from David
S. Shearman, commander of the Black Ball Line's Great Western, after
arriving in Liverpool (letter describes attempted mutiny during the long
voyage), some received at U.S. ports as ship letters, others via American
or British packets, a few with forwarder handstamps incl. MacDonald & Co.
Singapore, write-ups describe routes and rates, some with transcripts of
interesting letters, minor edge faults in some, generally in good
condition, a desirable group incl. covers with South American and Far East
origins |

U.S.-China Mails--The Williams Correspondence. 1854-56, nine covers
with letters on annotated exhibit pages in album, written by Frank D.
Williams, a passenger aboard the bark Messenger Bird during its
journey thru South East Asia, first from Anjer in the Dutch East Indies
(carried outside mails to Singapore, then to Boston), others from Shanghai
and Foochow, letters are detailed and well-written incl. descriptions sea
travel and local environs (all transcribed), minor faults, still a
presentable and very rare intact correspondence reflecting postal routes
between China and the U.S. during the 1850's |
