Ship Letter/Victoria Hong
Kong. Two-line handstamp on 1849 folded letter to Guildford, England,
"Hong Kong 29 DE 1849" backstamp, Very Fine, this marking is identified in
Webb on pp. 338-340 as a pre-paquebot marking, this is the only "ship
letter" stamp recorded used in Hong Kong, accompanied by page describing

to Fair Haven Mass., oval "Russell & Sturgis * Manila *" forwarder's
handstamp, neat "Hong Kong MR 29, 1866" backstamp where it entered the
mails, London and New York transits, sent via Marseilles and eventually on
the HAPAG line's Saxonia to New York, appropriate credits, fresh and
Fine, 1c overpayment of 53c rate, accompanied by exhibit page giving
detailed explanation of rate and route
