Newton, Gordon & Murdock Correspondence to Madeira. 29 folded
letters or covers on annotated exhibit pages in one album, all addressed to
Madeira between 1793 and 1859 from the famous Newton, Gordon & Murdock
archive sold by Robson Lowe, business content related to the importation of
Madeira port wine, earliest letters carried outside the mails with ship
names designated by sender, origins incl. U.S., London and Copenhagen,
variety of markings, some toned or slightly faulty, overall condition is
well above average, a scarce group of interest to the transatlantic or wine

American Bible Society to or from the U.S. (several domestic), remarkably
diverse range of routes and rates, better items incl. "Mail Route",
Independent Mails, cross-border, Great Western packet, "Consignee
Letter", Howard's Hotel oval, U.S. City Despatch Post, Smyrna to U.S. via

Cunard Transatlantic Sailings. 223 covers on annotated exhibit pages
in six albums, an in-depth study of this preeminent transatlantic mail
transporter, generally arranged by ship name, years range from 1840 to the
1920's, stampless and stamped covers (U.S. and G.B. frankings), many maiden
and last voyages, disrupted voyages, record-breaking trips, all carefully
described and documented, among the items noted are 1851 London to Bermuda
on the Halifax-Bermuda line, Harnden forwarder oval, Europa
6/18/1849 collision with Charles Bartlett (which cut the American
immigrant ship in half and left only 43 survivors of 177 persons aboard),
Britannia 2/5/1844 sailing which was ice-bound in Boston Harbor
(citizens helped cut a seven-mile passage thru the ice), scarce handstamped
rate markings such as Boston "39-1/2" and "In U.S. Notes 72" in circle,
Philadelphia "20-3/4", condition is generally clean and presentable, the
documentation and photos are a fascinating supplement to this significant
group of Cunard covers |

exhibit pages in album, years range from 1839 to 1914 with majority
pre-1900, a marvelous array of origins and destinations served by the P & O
incl. India, Dutch East Indies, Singapore, Egypt, Victoria, Ceylon, Spain,
Gibraltar, extraordinarily diverse markings incl. "B.C. Cadiz" British
Consulate handstamp, "Gibraltar" arc, British P.O.'s in Vigo (Spain),
Alexandria (Egypt), Gibraltar, better U.S.-related covers incl. 1853
Singapore to U.S., 1853 Egypt to U.S., 1857 Batavia to U.S., 1869 Victoria
to Canada via Southampton and Portland, some tissue-paper covers have

Transatlantic Steamship Lines. Important collection of 472 covers
plus collateral material (menus, advertising etc.) on
meticulously-annotated exhibit pages in nine albums identified by company,
incl. Allan Line (79), Ocean Steamship Navigation Co. (23), Atlantic Steam
Navigation Co. (4), La Compagnie General Transatlantique (33), White Star
Line (44), Guion Line (23), North German Lloyd (85), Inman Line (85), HAPAG
(53) plus a variety of other smaller lines represented by 42 covers,
enormous range of origins, destinations and transit countries, many with
U.S. and foreign stamp frankings, all identified by sailing with extensive
analysis of routes and rates, to briefly describe highlights we note among
volumes (shown in bold): Allan Line 1861 Silesia to U.S. via Quebec
with Portland Me. exchange datestamp, numerous Canada frankings incl.
12-1/2c and 17c Decimal, 1866 registered to U.S. with G.B. franking,
1867-71 Chicago "U.S. Notes" depreciated currency handstamps with 21c, 22c
and 31c rates, several with blue Chicago exchange office datestamps, U.S.
3c 1869 to Scotland with Glasgow Packet handstamp, 1867 Smyrna Turkey to
N.Y. via French Mail and Allan Line with N.Y. depreciated currency
handstamp, 1870 legal-size with South Australia franking to Kansas via
Chicago exchange office, Ocean Steam Navigation Co. 1847 sailings of
the Washington (from 2nd voyage on) and Hermann, 1848
retaliatory rate, La Compagnie General Transatlantique Ligne H
covers incl. some with U.S. frankings from 1861 thru Bank Note period
(incl. 3c Vermilion No. 214), Vanderbilt European Line with numerous
stampless and one with U.S. 3c & 12c 1857 franking, White Star Line
with wide variety of U.S. and foreign stamp frankings incl. Portugal, St.
Helena, U.S. Parcel Post, Guion Line 1st sailing under U.S. 6c
contract rate to G.B. with 6c 1869, nice variety of Bank Note and G.B.
frankings, North German Lloyd with diverse range of late 19th
Century U.S. and foreign frankings, many souvenir cards and illustrated
covers, Inman Line with U.S. and G.B. 1860's frankings, depreciated
currency handstamps, this collection represents a lifetime of collecting
and study, there are more than one hundred covers with values in the $100
to $200 range and at least another hundred in the $50 to $100 range, but
beyond the value of the covers themselves is an invaluable trove of
information about transatlantic postal history, we encourage prospective
