to just in, tied by well-struck "New-York Apr. 24" circular datestamps on
blue part-printed folded letter with printed 1852 London, England
dateline to Alexandria Va., back with clear strike of greenish-blue
"Forwarded by De Jonge Bros. & Co. New York" oval backstamp, light file
folds well clear of stamps, Fine, scarce usage which originated in England
and entered the mails in New York

handstamp on turned cover, first use is a 3c Red Nesbitt entire
(U10) cancelled by "New Orleans La. May 16, 1857" datestamp with printed
address, both sides are addressed to Bayou Sara La., small repair at bottom
right corner of cover, appears Fine, a lovely item for the specialist,
"turned" usages are often seen on Confederate Civil War covers but are very
unusual prior to that time (Image) |
