rightEXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY COLORFUL AND RARE COMBINATION
OF 1857 ISSUES TO PREPAY THE 15-CENT TREATY RATE TO FRANCE AND THE ONE-CENT
"TO THE MAILS" CARRIER FEE IN NEW YORK CITY. Based on the New York
Mar. 13 and Havre Mar. 26, 1861, dates and 12c credit, this cover was
carried on the Adriatic, departing from New York on Mar. 13 and
arriving at Queenstown on Mar. 23. According to North Atlantic Mail
Sailing 1840-75 (p. 45, footnote 69), the Galway Line's Adriatic
was used by Cunard for this eastbound voyage. Very few covers are
known with stamps prepaying the transatlantic rate and carrier fee. This is
the second such cover we have seen with 5c and 10c 1857 Issues. (Image) |
